Vista Land profit up by 13% in first quarter

Vista Land and Lifescapes, Inc. (VLL)’s attributable profit grew by 13% in the first three months of 2018, supported by its residential business alongside the ramp up of the commercial leasing segment.
The Villar-led property developer generated P2.54 billion in net income attributable to equity holders of the parent for the first quarter, higher than the P2.26 billion it booked in the same period a year ago.
“We are pleased to have been able to achieve solid growth over the past years and it should be the same this year as we take advantage of the various synergies that we have unlocked among our businesses,” VLL Chairman Manuel B. Villar was quoted in a statement as saying. — Arra B. Francia

GT Capital implementing masterplan for Bay Area project

GT Capital Holdings, Inc. is now implementing the masterplan for its 40-hectare mixed-use estate in the Bay Area called Metro Park, where it recently opened a new office building for the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.
“The land area in the reclaimed [land] is 40 hectares, so they’re now doing the masterplan for the full development,” GT Capital President Carmelo Maria L. Bautista told reporters after the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting in Makati City on Thursday, May 10.
Metro Park is being developed by Federal Land, Inc., GT Capital’s property arm. The company has so far opened one office building called iMet in the mixed use project. iMet is registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority and has a total of 10 office floors with a floor plate of 2,029 square meters each.
Mr. Bautista noted that there are also six towers and a retail mall being developed in the area. — Arra B. Francia

BTr may tweak volume of one-year T-bills amid lukewarm demand

The Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) said it will “revisit” the volume of the Treasury bill’s one-year tenor amid lukewarm demand for the said security.
Deputy Treasurer Erwin D. Sta. Ana said the BTr might tweak the volume of one-year paper following two successive rejections from the said tenor.
“For this quarter, we don’t have plans of changing it, but for the third quarter, we will revisit it,” Mr. Sta. Ana told reporters following the Treasury bond auction Tuesday.
Earlier this week, the Treasury rejected all bids for the 364-day security during the Treasury bill auction as offers only reached P4.58, below the P6 billion planned borrowing.
The government also rejected all bids for the tenor during the April 30 auction. The tenor received tepid demand from investors amounting P2.98 billion, also undersubscribed from the intended borrowing. — Karl Angelo N. Vidal

Ceres takes two-goal advantage vs Yangon

By Michael Angelo S. Murillo
Senior Reporter
PLAYING with more sense of urgency than its previous game, Ceres-Negros FC came out on top of visiting Yangon United FC, 4-2, in the first leg of their AFC Cup knockout match on Wednesday night in Bacolod City, moving one step away from the ASEAN Zonal finals.
The reigning ASEAN winner in the tournament, Ceres was towed to the victory over Yangon by the brace of team leading scorer Bienvenido Marañon and goals each from Patrick Reichelt and Super.
The win was a bounce back for the “Busmen,” who nearly missed the ride to the knockout stages after losing in their final game in group play against Home United FC of Singapore, 2-0, in the process having group leadership slip from their hands.
Ceres was able to book a ticket by finishing with the best runner-up record of four wins, a draw and a loss with 13 points.
Mr. Marañon got the scoring for Ceres on Wednesday in the 29th minute after racing on to a throughball from teammate Manny Ott.
It was followed up on to by Mr. Reichelt four minutes later off a rebound from a blocked shot, helping Ceres to a 2-nil lead.
Spaniard Marañon further buried the visitors with another goal as the opening half drew to a close, scoring in the 44th minute to make it 3-0.
Yangon was able to break through 10 minutes after the start of the second half, with Sekou Sylla, who used to play for Global Cebu FC, on the scoring end.
The hosts though were quick to check any momentum that Yangon was trying to build with a 63rd-minute goal from Super setting the visitors back anew.
Yangon tried to claw its way back but could only come within two points with Mr. Sylla providing another point in the 83rd minute.
With the victory, Ceres takes a two-goal advantage heading into the next leg in Myanmar on May 16.
Worth noting, however, are the two away goals that Yangon scored in Bacolod and that Ceres has to do a good job negating it come the next encounter.

PBA Commissioner’s Cup hits the road in Laguna

By Michael Angelo S. Murillo
Senior Reporter
PHILIPPINE Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup action goes on the road today with a double-header at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
The Phoenix Fuel Masters (2-1) battle the winless NLEX Road Warriors (0-3) in the curtain-raiser at 4:30 p.m. while struggling teams Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings (0-2) and Blackwater Elite (0-4) tussle in the main game at 7 p.m.
Phoenix goes into its match with NLEX off an impressive 89-87 come-from-behind win over the Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok on May 6 where sophomore guard Matthew Wright drained a huge three-pointer down the stretch to help complete their comeback win.
The team trailed for much of the contest but it showed tremendous grit and determination to fight back and eventually was rewarded for it.
Magnolia held a two-point lead, 87-85, with 15 ticks to go, more than enough time it turned out for the Fuel Masters to snatch the victory.
Off a timeout, Phoenix set up the play that enabled Mr. Wright to make things happen, which he delivered to accordingly, pulling back for a triple with 3.2 seconds left to give his team the lead, 88-87.
A free throw by Mr. Wright after off a technical foul charged to Magnolia for calling an excessive timeout sealed the victory for Phoenix.
Gilas Pilipinas member Wright led the Fuel Masters with 19 points with import James White adding the same number of points. Veteran Willie Wilson had 17.
“It was a lucky shot but we will take it. We came out flat to start the game and good thing we were able recover. This is a big win for us heading to our next game against NLEX which I’m sure is very hungry after losing three straight,” said Phoenix coach Louie Alas following their win.
START TURNING THINGS AROUND
Staring at getting buried deeper in the tournament in the event of another loss, NLEX recognizes that it has to start turning things around.
The latest of the defeats of the Road Warriors was dealt by the Meralco Bolts, 106-90, on May 4 in a match that they trailed from start to finish.
Import Arnett Moultrie top-scored for NLEX with 25 points to go along with 17 rebounds in the loss with JR Quiñahan adding 18 markers.
“It’s disappointing because we played so well in the last conference. We’ve been making progress steadily, and then we come to this,” said NLEX coach Yeng Guiao, referring to their semifinal finish in the Philippine Cup.
“To be in a hole like 0-3, it’s like an emergency situation. If we don’t pick it up in the next few games, I guess we will be looking forward to the next conference. It’s not what we’ve expected, but we just have to go back and evaluate what we’re doing wrong,” the fiery coach added.
Meanwhile, in the opening game, hard luck teams to date Barangay Ginebra and Blackwater try to notch their maiden win in the midseason PBA tournament.
The Kings have lost back-to-back matches to start their campaign with import Charles Garcia in tow and with big man Greg Slaughter still in sick bay.
Blackwater, meanwhile, has had it eventful so far but for not the good reasons, losing four straight and having to make a coaching change.

Celtics defeat Sixers to book spot in East finals

LOS ANGELES — Rookie Jayson Tatum scored the go-ahead layup with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth as the Boston Celtics punched their ticket to the NBA Eastern Conference finals with a 114-112 win over Philadelphia.
Tatum made it 111-109 after catching a pass from Marcus Smart under the basket and Terry Rozier helped seal the win by making a pair of clutch free throws with nine seconds left as the Celtics eliminated the 76ers four games to one.
“We got a lot of heart and a lot of talent on this team, nobody expected us to get this far,” said Tatum.
The Celtics advance to the NBA’s final four to face LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second straight year for a berth in the finals.
Boston was coming off a defeat in game four, but managed to impose their will on the 76ers down the stretch in Wednesday’s thriller, improving to 7-0 on their home court in these playoffs.
The 76ers made the Celtics work in a game that featured 21 lead changes.
But Philadelphia had dropped the first three games and were ultimately unable to become the first team to rally from 0-3 down to win an NBA playoff series. Teams have now gone 130-0 when leading 3-0.
Forward Tatum tallied 25 points, guard Jaylen Brown had 24 and Rozier finished with 17 points and six rebounds for the Celtics who are 37-0 when taking a 2-0 lead in a playoff series.
Joel Embiid and Dario Saric of Croatia each scored 27 points, while Australia’s Ben Simmons finished with 18 points and eight rebounds and six assists for Philadelphia, who are 0-15 when losing the first two games of a series.
Tatum is the second rookie this post-season to notch seven straight 20-plus point playoff games. He joined Utah’s Donovan Mitchell, who did it over the first two rounds for a Jazz team ousted by the Houston Rockets on Tuesday.
Embiid had an opportunity to tie it after Tatum’s layup but was guarded closely and missed the shot. He grabbed his own rebound but lost that too when Rozier slapped the ball away with 10.8 seconds remaining.
Rozier made it 113-109 with his free throws but then a J.J. Reddick’s three pointer got the 76ers back to one point with 3.8 seconds left.
Smart went to the line and missed his first free throw. He tried to miss the second which would have run the clock down but it rattled in stopping time and allowing Philadelphia to try one more play. The 76ers then attempted a Hail Mary pass down the length of the court but it was intercepted by Smart who had raced back to defend after his bungled free.
“That’s a Marcus Smart sequence,” said Brown of his Celtic teammate. “The first guy back and he makes the steal. He didn’t care if he runs into somebody or hurts himself.”
EMBIID DITCHES MASK
Embiid, who was wearing a black oval mask to protect his face because of a fracture, took the vizard off for the final sequence.
“The thought was this could be the last possession of the season. I was against all the doctors but I had to toss it aside,” Embiid said.
Both the Celtics and Cavaliers have undergone roster overhauls since the Cleveland ousted the Celtics in five games last year. Only four players on each side remain from that series.
The Conference finals are now set as the East series begins Sunday at the Boston Garden and the West on Monday when the Houston Rockets host the Golden State Warriors.
Asked how the Celtics were going to shutdown James, Tatum gave his honest reply, “It is my first year. I don’t have the answer. I am going to enjoy this tonight and then go to practice tomorrow and figure it out.”
Al Horford said they will be ready.
“People from the outside probably didn’t expect much from us. But I’ve seen the way these guys prepare and they want to be great.” — AFP

JCI Manila stages scaled-up Run for the Mountains

FOLLOWING a successful staging of the “Run for the Mountains” charity run last year, JCI Manila returns with a scaled-up edition of the event for 2018.
To be held on June 24 at the Seascape Village in Pasay City, the run will also be held simultaneously at SM City Iloilo, with the aim of reaching more people to spread awareness about the plight of the indigenous peoples in the country and gather financial support for the latter.
JCI Manila said like in 2017, Run for the Mountains this year will showcase an experiential race course that will enable leisure, amateur, and professional runners to experience firsthand how our indigenous peoples hunt, cook and go about their day-to-day activities while covering a distance of 3k, 5k or 10k.
Group President Joaquin Esquivias said Run for the Mountains is one of their major fund-raisers and something they are really pushing for, seeing how far it can go in making a difference in the lives of their chosen beneficiary.
“This is one of our bigger projects. It’s a collaboration between our National Relations Directorate and the Special Projects Directorate. We are partnering this time with JCI Iloilo Ilang Ilang so we are scaling up the project to not only be held here in Manila but in another major city in the country as well to create wider awareness not only for the run itself but also for the plight and problems of our IP (indigenous people) communities,” said Mr. Esquivias in an interview with BusinessWorld during the event launch on Wednesday at Mazu Seascape in the CCP Complex.
The JCI Manila president went on to say that since they are staging the Run for the Mountains on a bigger scale this time around, it required other groups to come on board as presenting partners, something he said they did not have much problem doing with companies like PLDT and Jollibee sharing JCI’s vision for the program.
“Their (companies) involvement cannot be more relevant. Our sponsors, apart from giving resources, not necessarily funds, create the awareness we are aspiring for and to a scale beyond the organization’s network,” Mr. Esquivias said.
Those interested in joining Run for the Mountains 2018 can register at Garmin MOA; Garmin Glorietta; Garmin Uptown BGC; Garmin Megamall; Affinitea SM North, Affinitea Legarda; Apartment 8 — 33B Scout Borromeo St. Brgy. Filipino fighters showcase wares in ‘Survival Instinct’

FILIPINO boxers take front and center on Sunday, May 13, as they headline “Survival Instinct: Matira Matibay” at the SM North EDSA Skydome.
Organized by Joven Sports Promotions, the packed boxing offering will showcase a good mix of seasoned and up-and-coming local fighters.
Headlining the event is former Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, who is out to take his professional career to another plane as he takes on Colombian Gabriel Mendoza in an International Boxing Federation minimum weight world title eliminator.
Also part of the card are AJ “Bazooka” Banal (35-2-1, 23 KOs) against Indonesian Master Suro (12-13-1, 2 KOs) and Marvin Sonsona (21-1-1, 15 KOs) versus Arief Blader (23-27-2, 8 KOs) also of Indonesia.
In the lead-up to the event, Davao native Barriga said he is very excited for his upcoming fight and is looking at it with much significance.
“This is a big fight for me and I’m very thankful for the opportunity. I have been training hard with my team for it and I will try my best not to let our hard work go to waste,” said Mr. Barriga (8-0, 1 KO).
But while he has stayed undefeated since moving to the professional ranks in July of 2016, Mr. Barriga, a decorated national team athlete who saw action in the London Olympics in 2012, said the transition is still ongoing for him.
He has been training hard at Survival Camp with coach Joven Jimenez and stablemate Jerwin “Pretty Boy” Ancajas, the IBF super-flyweight champion.
Mr. Barriga said he knows he is up against a tough opponent in Mr. Mendoza (29-5-2, 23 KOs) but vowed to give his all.
Mr. Sonsona, too, said that he has been working hard in training especially since he is coming off a three-year hiatus from boxing.
“I was away for three years and I’m really working hard to regain my speed. So we’ll see what happens,” said Mr. Sonsona, who last fought and won in June of 2015 against American Jonathan Arrellano.
Survival Instinct: Matira Matibay will be aired over ESPN5 beginning at 3 p.m. with livestream on ESPN5.com.
Tickets for the fight event are available at select SM Cinema outlets and online at SMTickets.com. Gates open at 10 a.m. — Michael Angelo S. Murillo

BanKo Perlas Spikers complete PVL lineup, hope to break into Final Four

NEW COACHES. New players. New imports.
With these changes, the BanKo Perlas Spikers hope to finally break into the Final Four of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) 2nd Reinforced Conference. The team finished 5th in both the Reinforced and Open conferences of the PVL’s inaugural season last year.
“Right now, our target is to make it to the final four first. From there we’ll see if we reach the finals. We’ll work on making the team work together inside the court,” said new BanKo Perlas head coach Ariel dela Cruz.
BanKo Perlas named dela Cruz as head coach of the Spikers, replacing Thai mentor Nai Muhammed in the second season of the PVL. He will be joined by former national team member Michelle Carolino in the coaching staff.
Dela Cruz said they got new players from the UAAP. The lineup now includes strong imports in former Thai national team member Jutarat Montripila and American outside hitter Kia Bright, whose goal is to make her teammates’ job easier.
“I consider myself a very versatile hitter. I just want everybody to play their best and I’m prepared to take on that extra weight and help the team,” she said.
A product of the University of Central Florida, Bright admitted having to adjust to the local gameplay. “The speed of play is a little bit slower, but there are a lot more rallies,” she said. “They play with so much heart and they don’t just give up on plays.”
Completing the BanKo Perlas Spikers lineup are Team Captain Sue Roces, Mae Tajima, Giselle Tan, Ella de Jesus, Amanda Villanueva, Joy Dacoron, Jem Ferrer, Amy Ahomiro, Fhen Emnas, and Nicole Tiamzon.
BPI Direct BanKo, Inc., a subsidiary of the Bank of the Philippine Islands, began supporting the team last year to promote the sport nationwide and reach out to more clients. BanKo focuses on delivering financial solutions to the unbanked and underserved, thereby bringing the benefits of financial inclusion to many Filipinos.
“We have a very exciting team. We have a combination of imports and good local players,” said BanKo President Jerome Minglana, adding that the team’s growth is similar to and consistent with the BanKo brand. “We can give a good fight against all the teams so long as we play to our full potential.”
The PVL Reinforced Conference opened last May 6. BanKo Perlas Spikers will first appear in this year’s tournament on May 12 at Tuguegarao City, playing against Creamline Cool Smashers and Pocari Sweat Air Force.
BanKo Perlas Spikers will bid for the Final Four this year in the PVL.

CoTY

First off, let’s be clear about one thing: You need ego to coach in the National Basketball Association. You can’t be anywhere near effective in directing players who have salaries that dwarf yours if you don’t know your strengths and, just as importantly, have pride in them. Competence is one thing, and should be a given. There are only 30 spots, and the fact that you got one means you’re good with the Xs and Os. Success is another, and requires a walk on the tightrope that bridges assertion and understanding, especially when it comes to dealing with invariably entitled superstars.
Which, in a nutshell, is why Brad Stevens has managed to coax the most out of his charges. To argue that the Celtics have had an up-and-down season is to understate the obvious. They blew up a roster that led them to the 2017 Conference Finals, snagged two All-Stars in the process, and then went through a regular season in which both wound up injured and out for the remainder of their 2017-2018 campaign. Yet, even as advanced analytics had them waddling through mediocrity, their bench tactician instead steered them to surprising competitiveness.
In this light, Stevens isn’t just being modest when he says he accepts why his name didn’t appear in a single National Basketball Coaches Association ballot for Coach of the Year (CoTY). He’s staying true to himself. The confident, if even-keeled, approach that has allowed him to prosper despite seemingly overwhelming odds propels his appreciation of the development. He realizes all the effort everybody else in the hot seat has put in and rightly believes voting results to be no slight.
If anything, the recognition of Dwane Casey as CoTY underscores the propriety of Stevens’ position. The Raptors mentor presided over a cultural transformation that allowed the red and black to claim the conference top seed, an accomplishment that will not be erased from the books even if their subsequent shellacking at the hands of LeBron James and the Cavaliers figures to impact his tenure. The work is hard. The work never ends. The work does not look for recognition other than what the results highlight.
It is with no irony that Stevens now finds himself in the same boat. As with Casey and the Raptors before him, the Celtics’ road to the Finals will come through James. And, parenthetically, the underestimation of his coaching prowess is juxtaposed with that of Tyronn Lue, whose crucial role in engineering the greatest comeback in league history en route to the 2016 championship continues to be discounted, and whose steady oversight of the dysfunctional Cavaliers remains overlooked.
So when Stevens says “it’s so incredible to have an opportunity to be one of 30,” he means it. And, frankly, the finest feather in a coach’s cap is not that which comes from peers, but from the players themselves. It’s why he won’t be losing any sleep over the supposed passover. He had them at hello, and he knows he will still have them when the inevitable goodbye comes.
