THE POSTER for Respeto

GAWAD URIAN, considered the most prestigious film award in the country, enters its 41st year by announcing this year’s nominees, with a hip-hop film and a historical drama bagging the most number of nominations.
The awards night will be held on June 14 at the ABS-CBN Vertis Tent in Quezon City. CinemaOne will air the ceremony on June 14, 7 p.m.
Leading this year’s pack is Alberto “Treb” Montreras II’s Respeto (2017), the tale of an aspiring hip-hop artist who meets a poet still haunted by his martial law past. The film earned 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for rapper Raymond “Abra” Abracosa.
Following Respeto in number of nominations is Khavn dela Cruz’s Balangiga: Howling Wilderness (2017) which secured 10 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director.
Other Best Picture nominees are Tu Pug Imatuy (2017) by Arnel Barbarona, Ang Larawan (2017) by Loy Arcenas, The Chanters (2017) by James Robin M. Mayo, Birdshot (2016) by Mikhail Red, and Bhoy Intsik (2017) by Joel Lamangan.
This year’s Gawad Urian will be giving its lifetime achievement award — the Natatanging Gawad Urian — to jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and musical director Winston Raval. Mr. Raval has scored over 20 films and was awarded a Gawad Urian for his work in Ishmael Bernal’s Ikaw ay Akin (1978).
