THE Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said establishments engaged in accommodation and food service activities generated gross revenue of P332 billion in 2015.

In a report, the 2015 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry, the PSA said the sector employed 268,655 workers and that restaurants and mobile food service workers topped the category, accounting for 3,942 or 71.8% of the 5,492 establishments employing 20 or more workers.
Short-term accommodation activities was the next most common form of establishment with 1,210, while beverage-serving activities; and event catering and other food service activities, numbered 261, and 79 establishments, respectively.
The growing number of establishments and significant increase in employment in the restaurants and mobile food service activities could be accounted from the country’s growth in tourism and the growing popularity of food parks.
The PSA said the National Capital Region (NCR) accounted for the bulk of the total establishments at 2,300 or 41.9%. It was followed by Calabarzon with 666 (12.1%), and Central Luzon with 566 (10.3%).
In terms of employment, the NCR accounted for nearly 130,000 employees. This was followed by Calabarzon and Central Luzon with 25,900 and 24,400 employees, respectively.
The average annual compensation an employee in the sector received in 2015 was P170,500, translating to a total of P45.6 billion compensation paid by the sector to workers in 2015.
By industry group, restaurants and mobile food service activities paid the highest compensation to its employees amounting to P28.9 billion or 63.4% of the total. This was followed by short term accommodation activities with P15.1 billion (33.1%) and event catering and other food service activities with P944.8 million (2.1%). — Ranier Olson R. Reusora
