Lightyear
THIS animated sci-fi action adventure is the origin story of Buzz Lightyear of Toy Story fame. Lightyear follows the Space Ranger on an intergalactic adventure alongside a group of ambitious recruits and his robot companion Sox. Directed by Angus MacLane, the film features the voices of Chris Evans, Taika Waititi, Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, Peter Sohn, Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, and Isiah Whitlock, Jr. The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde writes, “The most 1995 aspect of Lightyear comes from Evans’ performance, but only if you imagine he’s intentionally impersonating George Clooney for the entire movie; that’s how it sounds, anyway. The laughs generally come from Sohn, Aduba and Taika Waititi as an inexperienced member of the Space Ranger reserves who gets pressed into service….” Film review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 81%.

Ngayon Kaya
THE FIRST Filipino film to be shown in regular movie houses since the start of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Ngayon Kaya is about college friends Harold and AM who reunite at a friend’s wedding five years after graduation. Harold is a shy probinsiyano who is secretly in love with AM. They contemplate the “what ifs” of their lives and find a way through their unresolved feelings. Directed by Prime Cruz and written by Jen Chuaunsu, the film stars Paulo Avelino and Janine Gutierrez.
