DAVAO CITY — Amid growing maritime tensions with China, direct flights between Davao City and Jinjiang and Hong Kong are seen to resume in October, a Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) official revealed over the weekend.

CAAP-Davao Acting Manager and Davao City Airport Manager Rex A. Obcena said China’s Xiamen Air will resume servicing the Davao-Jinjiang air route.

“By our discussion with their (Xiamen Air) team, I think they will initially operate once a week to test the market. We are hopeful that if we go by their load factor in 2019, they might be able to see the opportunity,” he said, noting that their two flights a week serviced the air route prior to the pandemic.

Likewise, Mr. Obcena said that the Davao-Hong Kong route can be expected in October via Royal Air twice a week.

The route was previously served by Cathay Dragon, which Mr. Obcena said was still keeping Davao “within their radar.” — Maya M. Padillo
