AN OLONGAPO City Regional Trial Court has convicted the gunman in the killing of businessman Dominic L. Sytin.

In a 26-page decision, Judge Richard A. Paradeza found Edgardo P. Luib, the self-confessed gunman, guilty of murder and sentenced him to reclusion perpetua or 20 to 40 years of imprisonment. He was also found guilty of frustrated murder and was sentenced to six years to not more than 12 years in prison. The court said it is satisfied that the confession made by Mr. Luib was done voluntarily.

Mr. Luib said in his testimony that he was hired for the murder by Alan Dennis L. Sytin, brother of the slain businessman.

The court also said he was positively identified as the gunman by Efren Espartero, the body guard of Mr. Sytin whom Mr. Luib wounded and is the subject of the frustrated murder case. Collective testimonies of police officers also conclude that the firearm recovered from Mr. Luib was the same gun used to kill Mr. Sytin.

The slain businessman was the CEO of United Auctioneers, Inc., chairman of Foton Philippines, and director and chairman of the board of the listed LMG Chemicals Corp. — Vann Marlo M. Villegas
