A COMMANDER of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), identified as Mando Mamalompong who is also known as DM, and one of his followers were killed last April 20 in a clash with government forces in Barangay Olandang, Midsayap, Cotabato. The military’s Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) reported on Monday that combined elements of the 34th Infantry Battalion and the Midsayap Municipal Police Station, who were on a mission to serve a warrant of arrest, were fired upon by heavily-armed men under Mamalompong. The gun battle left Mamalompong and his follower Nur Hamid Sabdulla dead, while one soldier was slightly wounded. “The successful operation is attributed to the information shared by the local residents who do not want terrorists’ presence in their community,” said Brigadier General Alfredo V. Rosario, 602nd Brigade commander. The BIFF is a breakaway group from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which has signed a peace deal with the government.
