THE METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is seeking authority to file charges against jaywalkers who fail to pay the P500 fine or render community service. MMDA General Manager Jose Arturo S. Garcia told reporters on Thursday that he has requested local government officials to deputize MMDA officers in their local ordinances on jaywalking. He explained that once deputized, the MMDA will have the power to file a case under the local law and forward the information to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). “Pwede na namin silang file-lan ng kaso sa paglabag ng local ordinance, so kung may kaso na sila ng criminal case pwede na namin ipaalam sa NBI (Then we can file a case for violating the local ordinance, so if they have a criminal case, we can give that information to the NBI),” said Mr. Garcia.
