ILOILO CITY Councilor Plaridel C. Nava II, the new chairman of the council committee on appropriations, said he will oppose the P500-million Sports Arena in La Paz Plaza proposed by Mayor Jose S. Espinosa III as a priority project. “Asta na lang to sa damgo (It will remain just a dream),” Mr. Nava said. A supplemental budget of P35 million for the purchase of lot for the complex was earlier submitted to the council. “I’ll tell you now. We will reject that. They will not get a single centavo budget for the arena,” said Mr. Nava, adding, “But we have more problems like the markets, the drainage, the Iloilo City Community College, the roads. Mr. Nava is running for vice-mayor in the 2019 elections against the running mate of the re-electionist mayor. Mr. Espinosa, for his part, said he remains hopeful that the project will push through with support from the other members of the city council. “Hope dies last,” he said. — Louine Hope U. Conserva
