PHL not pursuing Sabah claim at this time
THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT has recently reiterated its ownership of Sabah, but the Philippines, which maintains a claim on the state, is keeping mum on the matter for now.
“So far, we have no formal reports of advancing that particular issue with that particular government,” Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Strategic Communication and Research Ernesto C. Abella said in a press conference on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
Asked if DFA Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano has communicated with the Malaysian government regarding the claim, Mr. Abella said: “When he does, we will inform you.”
Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Anifah Aman issued a statement last Jan. 31 reiterating Malaysia’s territorial claim on Sabah.
Mr. Anifah made the statement following what he said were “remarks by Mr. Aquilino Q. Pimentel, Jr., a member of the Philippines’ (Constitutional) consultative committee, which appeared in the media on the claim of Sabah recently.”
“The Government of Malaysia reiterates its position that Malaysia does not recognize and will not entertain any claims by any party on Sabah. Sabah is recognized by the United Nations (UN) and the international community as part of Malaysia since the formation of the Federation in 16 September 1963.”
Mr. Pimentel, who was sought for comment, said: “All I’m saying is that is the position of Malaysia. We will contest it. But in a friendly manner. There is no need to go to war and be angry with one another.” — Arjay L. Balinbin with a report from Camille A. Aguinaldo
