DEMAND FOR water desalination facilities has significantly increased with local government units (LGUs) aiming to deliver basic infrastructure to attract investments, according to Mactan Rock Industries, Inc., (MRII). Antonio Camelo P. Tompar, chairman of MRII with headquarters in Mandaue City, said with the national government’s ‘Build, Build, Build’ campaign, financial institutions are now opening windows to LGUs to help fund projects that will improve basic services, such as water supply. For this year, MRII is working on 30 awarded desalination projects in different parts of the country, including those in partnership with the Metropolitan Cebu Water District for additional bulk water supply for Talisay and Mactan. Most of the MRII projects are joint ventures with LGUs. Mr. Tompar said small islands such as those in Palawan, as well as Tawi-Tawi, are among the areas now building desalination water supply systems in their localities. “Desalination is the future of water supply around the world and we are already at par at this onset,” he added. — The Freeman
