Clock ticking

Novak Djokovic did not mince words in criticizing his own performance following his shocking exit in the United States Open. It wasn’t simply that he had his worst showing at Flushing Meadows since 2006. It was that he bowed out in a whimper; his four-set defeat at the hands of 28th seed Alexei Popyrin was a master class in how not to compete against an opponent he had already beaten in three previous meetings. “It was just an awful match for me. I wasn’t playing even close to my best.” Talk about an understatement.

The irony, of course, was that Djokovic arrived at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in high spirits. He had just come off a successful run at the Paris Games, thereby cementing his status as the best of the best of all time. And, outside of the momentum he generated as a result, he was at his fittest for the year. The torn meniscus in his right knee that required him to go under the knife in late June was fully healed, and he appeared confident in his chances to take a record 25th Grand Slam title.

Unfortunately, Djokovic came nowhere close to being at his best. Perhaps the truncated schedule also affected him the way it did Olympic silver medalist Carlos Alcaraz, who failed to survive the second round. As he explained in his post-mortem, “It’s not good to be in that kind of state where you feel okay physically, and of course you’re motivated because it’s a Grand Slam, but you just are not able to find your game.“ And he was on the mark; by the time he shook hands with Popyrin at the net, he had amassed a whopping 14 double faults along with a bevy of uncharacteristic missed shots.

In any case, the bout with futility has left Djokovic without a major this season. Interestingly, he last held an empty bag seven years ago, and seven years before that. To argue that the clock is ticking for him would be to highlight the obvious. If there’s anything his immediate past experience has showed, it’s that he has, at 37, become increasingly susceptible to the vagaries of Father Time. He’s now swimming against the current, and how much longer he can delay the inevitable remains to be seen.

Israel recovers bodies of six hostages in Gaza

TAYLOR BRANDON-UNSPLASH

JERUSALEM — Israel recovered the bodies of six hostages from a tunnel in southern Gaza where they were apparently killed not long before Israeli troops reached them, the military said on Sunday.

“According to our initial estimation, they were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists a short time before we reached them,” military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari told reporters in a briefing.

Days earlier, Qaid Farhan Alkadi, a member of the Bedouin community in southern Israel, was rescued about a kilometer away, the military said.

The Israeli military said the bodies of Carmel Gat, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi and Ori Danino had been brought to Israel.

US President Joseph R. Biden, who has closely followed the fate of the hostages seized on Oct. 7, said the six included Israeli American Mr. Goldberg-Polin.

“I am devastated and outraged,” Mr. Biden said in a statement issued by the White House.

After Mr. Alkadi was located, Israeli troops were told to be more cautious because of the likelihood that there might be other hostages in the area, but there had been no precise information on the location of the hostages, Mr. Hagari said.

Hamas and its armed wing did not immediately comment on the accusations.

At least 40,691 Palestinians have been killed and 94,060 injured in Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7, the enclave’s health ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

The war was triggered when Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

On Saturday, clashes broke out between Israeli troops and Palestinian fighters in the occupied West Bank as Israel pushed ahead with a military operation in the flashpoint city of Jenin. Hundreds of Israeli troops have been carrying out raids since Wednesday in one of their largest actions in the West Bank in months.

Mr. Goldberg-Polin, captured at a music festival near Gaza, appeared in a video released by Hamas in late April.

“He had just turned 23. He planned to travel the world,” Mr. Biden said. His parents, Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, “have been courageous, wise, and steadfast, even as they have endured the unimaginable,” Mr. Biden said.

“They have been relentless and irrepressible champions of their son and of all the hostages held in unconscionable conditions. I admire them and grieve with them more deeply than words can express,” the president said.

Mr. Biden vowed that “Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. And we will keep working around the clock for a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages.”

Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement, “I strongly condemn Hamas’ continued brutality, and so must the entire world. Ms. Harris, the Democratic candidate running to succeed Mr. Biden, said she and he would never waver in their commitment to free the Americans and all those held hostage in Gaza.

Earlier, speaking to reporters in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Mr. Biden said he was “still optimistic,” about a ceasefire deal to stop the conflict.

“I think we’re on the verge of having an agreement,” he said. “It’s time this war ended.”

Mr. Biden added that “people are continuing to meet.”

“We think we can close the deal, they’ve all said they agree on the principles.” — Reuters

Japan protests second territorial incursion by China in under a week

PHILIPPINE STAR/EDD GUMBAN

TOKYO — Japan lodged a protest with China after one of its naval survey vessels entered Japanese waters on Saturday, the second incursion into its territory by the Chinese military in less than a week.

An uptick in Chinese military activity near Japan and around Taiwan in recent years has stoked concerns in Tokyo. Japan has responded with a defense buildup that it says aims to deter Beijing from using military force to push its territorial claims in the region.

The ship was detected off the coast of Kagoshima Prefecture, in Japan’s southwest, at around 6 a.m. local time (2100 GMT Friday), and departed within two hours, the country’s defense ministry said.

Tokyo registered its “strong concern and protest over this incident” with a Chinese embassy official, the foreign ministry said in a statement that also referenced the first airspace intrusion by a Chinese military plane on Monday.

Tokyo told Chinese diplomats earlier this week that Monday’s violation of it airspace was “utterly unacceptable.”

A telephone call to the Chinese embassy in Tokyo went unanswered when Reuters called outside regular business hours.

Saturday’s incident was the 10th time in the past year that a Chinese naval survey ship has sailed through Japan’s territorial waters, and the 13th time if submarines and other intelligence-gathering vessels are included, according to national broadcaster NHK. — Reuters

Pope to visit Jakarta’s Istiqlal mosque in push for interfaith harmony

MAZUR/CATHOLICNEWS.ORG.UK

JAKARTA — When Pope Francis visits Indonesia next week, he will stop by a mosque in Jakarta that has an unusual feature — a tunnel connecting it to the city’s Catholic cathedral, as part of a push for interfaith harmony on his 12-day Asia-Pacific tour.

The 28.3-meter “Tunnel of Friendship,” connecting the iconic Istiqlal mosque to the Our Lady of the Assumption cathedral, was built by the government in 2020 as a symbol of religious harmony, a theme the global head of the Catholic church has also emphasized on his travels during his 11-year reign.

Pope Francis, 87, arrives on Tuesday in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, on the first leg of the longest trip of his papacy that will also take him to Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Singapore. The plans have drawn concerns over his increasing health problems.

The pope is scheduled to participate in an interfaith meeting at the mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, and to visit the tunnel, which features windows to let in light and inscribed art on the walls but is not yet open to the public.

“It’s extraordinary that the Catholics’ number one figure is coming,” said Nasaruddin Umar, the grand imam of the Istiqlal, whose vast parking lot is often open to churchgoers during major events. “Whatever your religion is, let’s respect our guest.”

Only about 3% of Indonesia’s population of 280 million are Catholic, while nearly 90% are Muslim.

The pope is scheduled to meet outgoing President Joko Widodo and hold a mass service at a Jakarta stadium, which is expected to be attended by more than 80,000 people, said Rev. Thomas Ulun Ismoyo, an Indonesian church official.

The visit has excited Indonesian Catholics, who have not experienced a papal visit in more than three decades.

“If I could meet him, I could only bow before him. I couldn’t even bring myself to hold his hand,” said Maria Regina Widyastuti Sasongko, a 77-year-old Catholic woman who sells items such as statues and t-shirts bearing the pope’s face.

Indonesia has been visited by two popes before — the first, Pope Paul VI in a 1970 trip to Jakarta and in 1989, Pope John Paul II, who visited Jakarta and four other cities.

SYMBOL OF FRIENDSHIP; CHEQUERED PAST
Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Indonesia’s religious affairs minister, said the pope’s visit was a symbol of friendship among people of all religions in Indonesia.

“The pope’s visit makes Indonesia the barometer of peace and a pillar of tolerance,” he told Reuters.

Still Indonesia has had a chequered history with religious harmony.

Catholicism came to the country by way of Portuguese missionaries in its eastern area in the 16th century, but historians say it was banned during Dutch colonial rule for about two centuries in favor of Protestantism.

The Vatican officially named a diplomatic representative in Indonesia in the 1940s.

And in modern Indonesia, officially a secular state, minority religions can still face discrimination.

The US religious freedom watchdog has said that “Indonesia’s religious freedom conditions remained poor” in 2023, citing several regulations including ones that led to closures of places of worship, including churches.

Andreas Harsono, the Indonesia researcher for Human Rights Watch, said the roots of religious intolerance, and church closures, were the laws that facilitate them.

But for Ms. Sasongko, the Catholic woman selling papal merchandise, the arrival of the pope signifies hope for unity.

“His visit can transform people to love one another,” she said. — Reuters

UNICEF issues emergency tender to secure mpox vaccines

THE United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued an emergency tender to secure mpox vaccines for crisis-hit countries in collaboration with the Gavi vaccine alliance, Africa CDC and the World Health Organization, the organizations said in a joint statement on Saturday.

Depending on the production capacity of manufacturers, agreements for up to 12 million doses through 2025 can be made, according to the statement.

Under the tender, UNICEF will set up conditional supply agreements with vaccine manufacturers, the statement said.

This will enable UNICEF to purchase and ship vaccines without delay, once financing, demand, readiness and regulatory requirements are confirmed.

The collaboration – which would also include working with the Vaccine Alliance and the Pan American Health Organization as well as with Gavi, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and WHO – would facilitate donations of vaccines from existing stockpiles in high-income countries.

The statement added that WHO is reviewing information submitted by manufacturers on Aug. 23, and expects to complete a review for an emergency use listing by mid-September.

The agency is reviewing applications for emergency licenses for two vaccines made by Bavarian Nordic and Japan’s KM Biologics.

Earlier in August, the WHO declared mpox a global public health emergency following an outbreak of the viral infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo that spread to neighboring countries.

More than 18,000 suspected cases of mpox have been reported in Congo so far this year with 629 deaths, while over 150 cases have been confirmed in Burundi, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

Sweden and Thailand have confirmed cases of the clade Ib type of the virus, outside of the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. — Reuters

Philippines lifts import ban on California, South Dakota poultry products

 – The Philippines has lifted its ban on importing domesticated and wild birds, including poultry products, from California and South Dakota, Manila’s farm ministry said on Saturday.

The two US states have not reported any new outbreaks of bird flu since early June, the ministry said in a statement.

The Philippines imposed the temporary ban on California in January and on South Dakota in November last year after confirmed outbreaks of H5N1 subtype of the highly pathogenic avian influenza, which has killed millions of infected birds and poultry. – Reuters

China, Philippines accuse each other of ramming ships in South China Sea

SCREENGRAB FROM PHILIPPINE COAST GUARD

 – The Philippines and China exchanged accusations of intentionally ramming coast guard vessels in disputed waters of the South China Sea on Saturday, the latest in an escalating series of clashes in the vital waterway.

The collision near the Sabina Shoal was their fifth maritime confrontation in a month in a longstanding rivalry.

Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam. Portions of the waterway, where $3 trillion worth of trade passes annually, are believed to be rich in oil and natural gas deposits, as well as fish stocks.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 found China’s sweeping claims had no legal basis, a ruling Beijing rejects.

Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela showed videos of Saturday’s confrontation at a press conference, saying China Coast Guard vessel 5205 “directly and intentionally rammed the Philippine vessel” without provocation.

The ramming damaged the 97-metre (320-foot) Teresa Magbanua, one of the Philippines‘ largest coast guard cutters, but no personnel were injured, Mr. Tarriela said.

Liu Dejun, a spokesperson for China’s coast guard, said in a statement a Philippine ship, “illegally stranded” at the shoal, had lifted anchor and “deliberately rammed” a Chinese vessel. He called on the Philippines to withdraw immediately or bear the consequences.

“The Chinese coast guard will take the measures required to resolutely thwart all acts of provocation, nuisance and infringement and resolutely safeguard the country’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” Mr. Liu said.

Mr. Tarriela said Manila would not withdraw its ship “despite the harassment, the bullying activities and escalatory action of the Chinese coast guard”.

US CONDEMNS CHINESE ‘VIOLATIONS’

The US ambassador to the Philippines expressed Washington’s support for the Philippines, a treaty ally.

“US condemns the multiple dangerous violations of international law by the PRC (People’s Republic of China), including today’s intentional ramming,” Ambassador MaryKay Carlson said on social media platform X.

The Philippines deployed a ship in April to the Sabina Shoal, 75 nautical miles from the coast of the Philippine province of Palawan. Manila accused Beijing of building an artificial island, saying it had documented piles of dead and crushed coral on the sandbars, which Beijing denies.

This week the Philippine maritime council said Chinese aircraft made unsafe manoeuvres against a civilian aircraft conducting patrols over two other disputed areas, the Scarborough Shoal and Subi reef.

The Philippines accused China of blocking a routine resupply mission on Sunday, saying Chinese vessels rammed and used water cannons on a fisheries bureau ship transporting food, fuel and medical supplies for Filipino fishermen. – Reuters

Studio Ghibli founder and Bhutan’s first awardee among recipients of RMA

Screenshot from Ramon Magsaysay Award Facebook Live

In the 66th year of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards, five recipients were announced, including the founder of Japan’s Studio Ghibli and Bhutan’s first-ever awardee.

The 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees are Karma Phuntsho (Bhutan), Miyazaki Hayao (Japan), the Rural Doctors Movement (Thailand), Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong (Vietnam), and in the category of Emergent Leadership, Farwiza Farhan (Indonesia).

“These transformative leaders are molding norms, stoking pathways, painting virtues, transforming systems, weaving peace, and reimagining the world born from countless dreams,” Cecilia L. Lazaro, Chairperson of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) said during the global announcement of awardees on Saturday.

Mr. Hayao, a Japanese master filmmaker and founder of Studio Ghibli, was recognized for more than 40 years of his “lifelong commitment to the use of art, specifically animation, to illuminate the human condition, especially lauding his devotion to children as the torchbearers of imagination,” RMAFs said in a statement.

Some of his notable works are My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, which have “teased our minds and enchanted our imaginations,” RMAF said.

According to Susanna B. Afan, President of RMAF, Mr. Hayao’s recognition is both an inspiration to young artists and a source of pride for the Asian community.

“We want to encourage artists to use art not just for money and self-promotion but to be a vehicle to teach young people about difficult things in life,” Ms. Afan said in an interview.

“This is truly an Asian art form, what they are able to do is totally accepted and loved by so many. It is a big achievement, and we Asians should be very proud that it happened.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Phuntsho was recognized as the first Bhutanese Magsaysay awardee for “his invaluable and enduring contributions towards harmonizing the richness of his country’s past with the diverse predicaments and prospects of its present,” RMAF said.

Mr. Phuntsho founded the Loden Foundation, which has been at the forefront of supporting Bhutanese children in meeting their educational needs.

The recognition of Bhutan’s first Magsaysay awardee indicates the foundation’s admiration for the country, Ms. Afan said.

“I hope that they realize although they are a small country, they’re part of the Asian community, we admire their culture, and we admire their history,” Ms. Afan said.

Other recipients include the Rural Doctors Movement, which was recognized for its historic contributions to the country’s public health as part of fulfilling and acknowledging citizens’ basic rights.

Ms. Phuong, an obstetrician was also recognized for using her abilities to aid the victims of Agent Orange, the toxic chemical sprayed by the US Army during the heights of the Vietnam War.

“Her work serves as a dire warning for the world to avoid war at all costs as its tragic repercussions can reach far into the future,” RMAF said.

Ms. Farhan, founder of Hutan, Alam dan Lingkungan Aceh (HaKa), was recognized for being the leading figure in strengthening the protection, conservation, and restoration of the Leuser ecosystem.

An Indonesian biodiversity hotspot and one of Asia’s largest carbon sinks.

The five newly announced Magsaysay Award recipients join a group of over 300 past awardees, continuing to inspire people, especially in Asia, with their transformative leadership.

“I think what makes its (Ramon Magsaysay Award) significant, (and) what makes it relevant are the awardees themselves… The work that they have done before still resonates today and is still relevant in today’s day” Ms. Afan said.Edg Adrian A. Eva

Nickel Asia Corp. to enroll all Guiuananons in digital health platform, improve healthcare access in Guiuan, Eastern Samar

From L-R: Nickel Asia Corp. Senior Vice-President for Sustainability, Risk, Corporate Affairs, and Communications Jose Bayani Baylon, Guiuan, Eastern Samar Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan, and CareSpan Asia Inc. CEO Raymond Vidal Marañon

Listed natural resources development company Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) in partnership with the Municipality of Guiuan, is funding the rollout of CareSpan’s digital health platform to modernize and improve health services in Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

The platform, called CareSpan, is one of the four approved health systems under the Universal Health Care (UHC) law. Once residents are registered into the system, it will be easier to avail themselves of the PhilHealth Konsulta package which includes consultations, health screenings, selected laboratory tests, and essential medicines.

Currently, Guiuan’s Rural Health Unit II is designed to serve a population of 20,000 to 30,000 people and is staffed by a municipal health officer, a public health nurse, two midwives, and a sanitary inspector. However, with the municipality’s population of 53,361—nearly doubling the unit’s intended capacity, healthcare services may face challenges to meet the needs of the growing community.

To address these gaps, NAC, through its philanthropic arm NAC Foundation Inc. (NACFI), is partnering with CareSpan Asia Inc., and the local government of Guiuan to hold a registration event that will benefit the entire community.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Nickel Asia Corporation and the LGU of Guiuan in this groundbreaking project,” said Raymond Vidal Marañon, CEO of CareSpan Asia Inc. “Our digital health platform is designed to bridge the healthcare access gap, and through this partnership, we are making significant strides in ensuring that every resident in Guiuan can receive quality care, regardless of their location.”

Aside from the PhilHealth Konsulta Package, the platform features an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) capabilities. These tools enable healthcare providers to monitor patients’ health remotely and create personalized treatment plans based on patients’ health histories. These are especially useful for managing chronic conditions in outlying areas such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

“We are honored that Guiuan is the first in Samar and Visayas to receive this wonderful program. I want to express my deepest gratitude to our partners, Nickel Asia Corporation and CareSpan Asia. This represents collaboration between the government and the private sector,” says Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan of Guiuan, Eastern Samar

This improvement is significant for the residents of the island of Manicani, a part of Guiuan, where one of NAC subsidiaries, Hinatuan Mining Corporation-Manicani, operates.

At present, the island relies heavily on Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and external aid for basic medical services, as reaching Guiuan involves a boat ride of 30 minutes to an hour.

“Supporting the Universal Health Care Law reflects our commitment to SDG 3 for good health and SDG 1 to end poverty. Research shows every Filipino family is one illness away from bankruptcy. This partnership will benefit families in Guiuan by helping them avoid falling into severe financial hardships due to medical costs,” says Jose Bayani Baylon, Senior Vice President for Sustainability, Risk, Corporate Affairs, and Communications at Nickel Asia Corporation, and President of NAC Foundation Inc.

SM’s Hans and Chico Sy share succession lessons, Henry Sy legacy

(L-R): SM Prime Holdings Chairman of the Executive Committee, Hans Sy, and his son, SM Engineering Design and Development President Hans “Chico” Sy, Jr., during the special session “Legacy of Guidance: How my Father Shaped My Life” at the 30th National Retail Conference and Expo (NRCE)

The National Retail Conference and Expo (NRCE) 2024, organized by the Philippine Retail Association (PRA), kicked off its second day with a highly engaging ‘fireside chat’ that featured SM Prime Holdings Chairman of the Executive Committee Hans Sy and his son, SM Engineering Design and Development President Hans “Chico” Sy, Jr. The two spoke informally about succession, and about carrying on a vision and legacy as set by SM founder Henry Sy, Sr. Anecdotal, humorous, and insightful; the two speakers captivated the audience.

How anecdotal, humorous, and light? Well, the first thing Mr. Hans mentioned was how Friday was his regular golf day, but he had given that up in order to make it to the NRCE event. And he proceeded to mention the recurring theme of how the Sy family operates on the principle of “we are never forced, but we have no choice!” And with that contradiction in terms, amidst much laughter from the audience, insight into how the Sy family deals with succession could be understood.

SM Prime Chairman of the Executive Committee, Hans Sy (right), and his son, SM Engineering Design and Development President Hans “Chico” Sy, Jr. (left), share insights on Henry Sy’s legacy of guidance.

Mr. Hans recounted working at the age of 13, and not the traditional ‘after college’. It was a family custom, and one the children would get excited about, ‘being able to help dad.’ His first job at 13? Throwing the garbage out and assisting the cash clerk — and for that, he had gotten all dressed up on his first day. And Mr. Hans was quick to point out that elder sister Tessie was then the cashier. It was all about working from the ground up and understanding the operations and experiencing what the rank and file go through on a daily basis. That was how Mr. Henry Sy wanted his children to appreciate the business.

(L-R): SM Prime Director Herbert Sy and his sons, Herson and Hendrick, proudly show their support for the National Retail Conference and Expo (NRCE).

Chico Sy then chimed in, saying that as a grandfather, Mr. Henry Sy would show more of his human and soft side. As a third-generation member, he did recall being exposed to the business at an early age, like walking through SM City North EDSA when it was still a construction site. And Chico joked about how that was a truly different time, as you can’t bring children to a job site nowadays.

Mr. Hans then spoke of the value of leading by example, something that was instilled into them from an early age by Mr. Henry Sy, also known as ‘Tatang’. And it’s one he has taken to heart himself. He remembers how Chico’s brother would think family dinner at 10 p.m. is a regular thing in most households, as that was the time Mr. Hans would get home from work. He frankly admitted he didn’t really have a life when he was working full time at SM. While he is still hands-on with National University (NU) and China Bank, he was honest to say that letting go and turning over responsibilities at SM Prime has been rewarding, giving him more time for himself.

(L-R): Penshoppe Brand Director Brandon Liu, SM’s Shereen Sy, and SM Supermalls’ Assistant Vice-President for Special Events and Tenant Marketing Hanna Carinna Sy

Chico recalled Tatang’s reminder that behind every success is a person, and it was important to understand that person. Chico accepted that as market leader and working under the umbrella of a massive vision and legacy, one has a unique set of challenges. What he remembers is how Tatang always said that the key is to stay focused, to stay hungry, and to stay humble. As market leader, you’re creating your own benchmark, and one has to challenge oneself every day.

To the mantra of focused, hungry, and humble, Mr. Hans then spoke of ‘malasakit,’ or being mindful of others. He mentioned how this was an added dimension by which one conducts business at all times. Resilient, innovative, and compassionate were the rules to also live by and embed in the company’s DNA. He reminded the audience that it should never just be about profit, of being the best, or dominating the market.

Mr. Hans recalled how all of his generation studied here in the Philippines; and how with the first grandchild, it was him who pushed for Chico to study abroad, convincing Tatang that Chico would learn more and could apply it here. Chico then revealed how his grandfather took him aside and reminded him that as the first to be sent to Melbourne, Australia, he better do well and prove the ‘experiment’ was worthwhile, or all the other grandchildren would never leave. Chico laughed remembering the weight on his shoulders from that one-on-one conversation. And he smiled saying that all the other grandchildren have since gone on to study abroad as well.

Mr. Hans then got nostalgic, recalling how so much of his time was spent with his father and loving how Tatang was so eager to spoil the grandchildren, easing up and lavishing so much love on this third generation. Misty-eyed, the two generations of Sys spoke of shared values playing an essential role in making succession effective and rewarding.

Much food for thought from this discussion, and the learning that so much about worthy succession has as much to do with things of the heart as it does with bottom lines and expansion targets.
