LOCKTON Philippines recently launched its first Legacy Awards, which will “recognize action research initiatives that promote responsible and efficient use of resources and help bring positive change in the way people look at protecting the environment.”

Lockton Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer Victorio V. Valledor said this is one of the ways the insurance and risk management provider is giving back to the community as it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

“We thought of starting with youth… because they are the remaining hope we have for this country,” Elfren S. Cruz, chairman of Lockton Philippines, said during the launch on Wednesday in Makati City.

“If you really look at it, looking at the future what is really has the greatest threat is the environment… for all the people of the Earth, so we decided to focus in the environment as a theme. We put it all together, this is a meaningful way of celebrating legacy,” he added.

The awards are open to teams of three to four Filipino college students who are enrolled in a BS or BA program in any Philippine tertiary education institution.

Participants are required to submit an evaluative, investigative and analytical action research proposal that provides improved business practices.

The research should outline ways on how an organization or a community can use its resources in a way that will not harm the environment.

On why the awards focus in environmental management, Mr. Valledor said, “Environmental risks is one of the risks are clients face. I think we couldn’t think of any other issue that is really relevant than environment.”

Lockton Philippines will offer the winning proposals to its clients and prospects, especially those who would want to have corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects but do not have one.

“We will offer it to corporations… that are looking or CSR implementable projects. The large conglomerates already made CSR units but a lot of these medium-sized companies actually do not have CSR units but they are looking for implementable projects,” Mr. Cruz explained.

“We are marrying the corporations looking for this kind of papers and the academic communities that can produce implementable projects,” he added.

The company targets at least 100 school to join. It has started to reach out to schools, while several institutions like the University of the Philippines and De La Salle University, have already showed interest in joining the competition.

“We are approaching the students and schools to come up with a study, and at the same time we are approaching corporations… who we assume are looking for CSR projects… We hope that once they are presented with these studies, they will appreciate the importance of the study and we expect them to implement this,” Mr. Valledor said.
