Fool on a hill
TOUTED AS THE costliest local movie production to date, Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is certainly easy on the eyes. The charming Dagupan sarsuela sequence is a 19th Letras y Figuras by the master Damian Domingo come to life. The dungeon scene of the torture of the late Gen. Luna’s aide Maj. Manuel Bernal (Art Acuna) is starkly and disturbingly lit, like a Goyo etching from Los Caprichos, with the defiant prisoner, a grotesque creature from hell who refuses to die, cackling at and mocking his captors.

Girl on Girl
THE PROSPECT of two spectacularly gorgeous, half-naked (but only their upper halves, for this movie is rated R-16) young women getting it on with each other for around a third of this nearly two-hour long feature, will surely draw in the curious crowds. However, the story of Adan, with its boldly unconventional take on the patriarchy, is more complicated than titillating, with artfully shot scenes of the taga-bundok (hillbilly) Ellen (Rhen Escano) gallivanting in sheer dresses which show off her nipples. She is practically unschooled. Her overly possessive father Lucas (Bembol Roco) was deeply traumatized by his wife’s Mara (Maui Taylor) taking off, and leaving him to raise their little daughter on his own. Thus, the mag-ama (family) have lived essentially as hermits for the last decade: off-the-grid, in near total rustic isolation, with only poultry and livestock for company.

When will Filipino food get its due?
THAI, Chinese, Japanese — their cuisine, or at least iterations and versions of them, have already made themselves known to the world. The West has adapted some of these dishes for their own repertoire. If California Maki and Orange Chicken exists, well, why haven’t we heard of, say, a San Francisco adobo?

A personal scent
THE SENSE of smell awakens something primal in many of us. While smelling something might bring back memories of an elevated, cherished status, it’s a different story during social interactions. Humans are still animals, and through scent, we pick up on cues the same way animals do: through scent, we pick up on a person’s health, values (I mean, does this person take the time for grooming? Does that person respect me enough to take a shower before meeting me?), and, like it or not, social status.
Ulan: The Shapes of Water
GENTLE sun-dappled rainfall is the benign form water takes for the child Maya (Elia Ilano) who lost her parents in a storm at sea. In Filipino folklore, this odd synchronicity of sunshine and rain is whimsically believed to happen during the weddings of tikbalang, those horse-headed creatures of our lower mythology who like to lead wayfarers astray. Do take note of the lovely cinematography and the thoughtful production design of this beautifully photographed film.
