Guardians
DURING the Cold War, a secret team of Soviet superheroes was created, including representatives of the different nationalities of the USSR. For years, the heroes had to hide their identities, but as times get hard, they find that they have to fight once more. Directed by Sarik Andreasyan, it stars Anton Pampushnyy, Sanzhar Madiyev, and Sebastien Sisak. TheHypedGeek.com’s Iain McNally writes: “That said, Guardians doesn’t quite fall into the ‘so bad, it’s good’ bucket… Guardians occasionally looks ‘cool’ but not often enough to remain entertaining. Despite some brazen attempts to set up sequels during the ending and the mid-credits stinger it’s doubtful The Avengers, or even the Justice League, need to watch their backs any time soon.”

A Kind Of Murder
A KIND Of Murder, adapted from a novel by Patricia Highsmith (who also wrote the script), is set in 1960s New York, where a successful architect married to the beautiful woman seems to lead a perfect life. However, his fascination with an unsolved murder leads him on a downward spiral. Directed by Andy Goddard, it stars Haley Bennett, Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, and Susan Boyd. The movie is “[a] handsome period piece that plays more like a scant-clues mystery than like the psychological thriller it intends to be,” writes John DeFore of the Hollywood Reporter. “While thrills are mitigated by convoluted plotting and suspect character behavior, the film’s uniquely bleak twist on classic noir conventions is enlivening,” says Nick Schager of Variety.

Kong: Skull Island
IN THE Nth reinterpretation of the King Kong story, Jordan Vogt-Roberts directs a cast which include Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hiddleston who play a team of explorers and soldiers traveling to an uncharted island in the Pacific, unaware that they are crossing into the domain of monsters, including the mythic Kong. “The dialogue is clunky, the A-list actors are slumming and, yeah, you’ve seen it all before, but the thunderously exciting creature effects make this Kong reboot a rip-roaring rumble in the jungle,” writes Peter Travers of Rolling Stone magazine. The film got a score of 79% from the film critic aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
