ON DEC. 10, at 19 East Bar, Posporo(s) holds its fourth and final concert with two dyed-in-the-wool bands who will take the audience to a trip filled with reference sounds, surprising turns and a lot of swing.
This time, Spanish ace musician Nacho Mastretta and his orchestra fly into Manila to join on stage Johnny Alegre, one of the best jazz guitarists in the Philippines who will be accompanied by well-known names in the city’s music scene such as Alvin Cornista, Ryan Villamor, Jay Cummings and Bergan Nuñez.
Posporo(s), meaning matchstick, is one of some 3,000 words of Spanish origin that has found its way into Tagalog, is a series of four concerts launched in September through the initiative of the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines and the Instituto Cervantes de Manila with the collaboration of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in their bid to promote independent music from Spain and the Philippines represented by four Spanish and four Filipino groups of different styles and tendencies but all examples of what is happening in the music scene in both countries that are 12,000 km. apart.
Posporo(s) primarily seeks to facilitate the exchange and meeting on stage between Spanish and Filipino musicians, aside from promoting Spanish alternative music in the Philippines, particularly in a megacity like Metro Manila, which is formed by 16 cities that boasts of a lively and dynamic musical scene that branches out to venues with nearly daily programs and enthusiastic audience. This project also aspires to introduce some of the more impressive Filipino bands to Spanish musicians and public.
Each of the four Posporo(s) concerts pairs a Spanish band with a Filipino group for the interaction held in different venues and cities in Metro Manila, thus fitting into the organic network of live music in the city.
Along with local band The Sleepyheads, Pablo Und Destruktion and his band La Tribu del Trueno ignited the first sparks of Posporo(s) last September in Bar 1951 in Malate. The second concert was held in October with Soleá Morente and Kalayo performing in 70´s Bistro, a historic music venue in Quezon City. In November, Delorean and Tarsius made everyone dance at Club XX XX in Makati City.
Now it is the turn of Mastretta and its unique sound with local group Johnny Alegre Affinity sharing the playbill on Dec. 10 at 19 East in Muntinlupa City.
Nacho Mastretta began his musical journey in the ’80s, forming part of the band Las manos de Orlac. The musician and sound technician from the mythical hall El Sol in the ’90s formed Mastretta at the end of the said decade, along with Miguel Malla and Pablo Novoa. It was also at that time that he began his career as composer of soundtracks such as Asfalto (Daniel Calparsoro, 2000), Torremolinos 73 (Pablo Berger, 2003) and Looking for Fidel (Oliver Stone, 2005), just to name a few. Since 2004, he has been playing with the eight-member orchestra who will make the audience tremble and be amazed.
Jamming with Mastretta will be the local group Johnny Alegre Affinity, led by renowned guitarist, composer and producer Johnny Alegre, who set up the group in 2002 and three years later, they recorded Jazzbound under the label Candid Records. Alegre is also a member of HumanFolk, a combo playing traditional Philippine music, which he formed along with avant-garde percussionist Susie Ibarra and other A-listers in the local music scene such as singer-songwriter Cynthis Alexander.
As in the three previous Posporo(s) concerts, a session with a guest DJ, in the person of the energetic Supreme Fist, tops off this last gig to offer music enthusiasts the latest in the contemporary musical culture of the city.
In a bid to boost the exchange between musicians of both countries, Posporo(s) recommends the Philippine bands be the tour guide of the Spanish groups in exploring the city, taking them to places that inspire them, accompanying them every day or showing them where they listen to the music they like.
Scenes from each of the performances and testimonies of the musicians involved in the project will be compiled in a documentary video.
Posporo(s) is an initiative of the Embassy of Spain in the Philippines and the Instituto Cervantes de Manila with the collaboration of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain, the Association of Singers and Performers (AIE) and the Etxepare Basque Institute, the Unión Fonográfica Independiente, Rustan´s and the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.
Posporo(s) has also the collaboration of the creative studio Team Manila, responsible for designing a special edition T-shirt for this series of concerts.
