The BenCab Museum will be opening two exhibitions on May 28. The first is Crusaders by Orley Ypon, which that portrays crowds of Filipinos in their naked glory in a seeming race to nowhere. Crusaders reflects on Ypon’s hyper-realistic painting style that highlights his mastery of the human anatomy. The second is a textile exhibition, Upland/Lowland Tingguian/Iloko, featuring spectacular weaves and textiles of the Tingguian of Abra and its uplands. The first Retrospective Exhibition of Antonio Austria is on view until July 10 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery) and Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino (3F Hallway Gallery). The Yuchengco Museum is featuring Light in the Darkness, a collection of paintings and drawings by painter Danilo Angeles Arriola, Jr., from his first collector and patron, architect Dan Lichauco. The exhibit showcases Arriola’s works inspired by the techniques of classical European artists such as Caravaggio, Chardin, and Bougueareau. The touring exhibition of Badong: Salvador Bernal Designs the Stage, organized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, is on view at the Ateneo Art Gallery until July 2. Curated by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, Gino Gonzalez, and Ricardo Cruz, the exhibit honors the late National Artist for Theater Design Salvador “Badong” F. The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD) has extended the Michael Lin: Locomotion exhibit until May 29. Italian soprano Elena Monti will be performing at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on May 28, 7:30 p.m. Elena Monti at the CCP will also be featuring Filipino tenor Ronan Ferrer and pianist Raul Sunico, the Musicgear Chamber, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra string ensemble under the baton of Ruggero Barbieri. The ICONIC Concert Series: Jed Madela Sings… Mariah will be held on May 28, 8 p.m., at the Music Museum, Greenhills Shopping Center, San Juan City. A recording artist and WCOPA world grand champion, Madela kicks off a new concert series which is a spin-off from his latest album, ICONIC, under Star Records. Aside from the songs in his album, he will perform iconic songs from iconic artists. Every show in the series will be different as he will do a segment in tribute to a different icon every night. Historian and journalist Ambeth Ocampo will lecture on cartoons as history and social commentary in “Telembang! Pakakak! Buntut Pague!” at the Lopez Museum and Library Collection, on May 28, 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Ocampo will look back at illustrations and cartoons to retrace our national narrative and revisit illustrations and political cartoons that framed issues and events, iconic images and scenes with a twist of humor and wit as a Filipino brand of social commentary.
