THE Villar Group will proceed with the expansion of its telecommunications unit despite backing out of the third telco race, focusing its eyes on areas outside Mega Manila.
Streamtech Systems Technologies, Inc. earlier purchased the bid documents for the selection of the third telco player, but eventually pulled out prior to the formal bidding process yesterday.
The company had already secured the national franchise to operate as a telco firm before the selection process, which it plans to use to expand existing operations.
“In order to offer nationwide services, it’s much easier to just get a national franchise. I think the administration wants that to spread broadband outside Metro Manila, so that’s what we’re going to do,” Prime Asset Ventures, Inc. Chairman Manuel Paolo A. Villar told reporters after the Villar group’s press briefing for its property business.
Mr. Villar said they have already started rolling out services in areas around Mega Manila. The company is currently processing permits to further widen its coverage by next year.
He also noted that it is open to working with the winning telco bidder to enhance connectivity in the country.
“It depends on the winner, because I’m sure the winner has to partner with a lot of smaller partners in order to go out. If it’s in line with our strategy, we’re willing to partner with anybody,” Mr. Villar added. — Arra B. Francia
