A TRAFFIC management campaign for the stricter implementation of road rules has been launched in Iloilo City to address the congestion in the growing urban area. “Traffic has already evolved not only in Metro Manila but in cities here in Visayas. We don’t want that to happen, especially that traffic here in the city has become more and more congested,” Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said during last week’s launching ceremony for the first “Traffic Discipline Zone” (TDZ). “We have to show them that here in Iloilo, once they enter our city, we follow traffic rules and regulation. This is important because those laws and ordinances have been with us for ages already and we have to remind again all our constituents,” he added. The first TDZ is the 14-kilometer stretch of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue, also known as the diversion road, and the next one lined up is the McArthur Drive in Jaro.

Enforcement will be handled by the members of the Land Transportation Office (LTO), the police’s Highway Patrol Group, and the city’s Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO). Jeck D. Conlu, PSTMO head, said the traffic enforcers have undergone training on apprehension protocols. “Proper courtesy is our priority. It was our first instruction to the traffic enforcers during the lecture since we received several complaints in our office concerning the manner of apprehension of our traffic enforcers,” Mr. Conlu said. At the launching ceremony, breath analyzers and speed guns that will be used by enforcers were presented by the LTO and PSTMO. — Emme Rose S. Santiagudo
