BUREAU of Correction (BuCor) chief Ronald “Bato” M. Dela Rosa on Wednesday said he will run for senator in the 2019 midterm elections.
After his oath-taking as the newest member of PDP-Laban in the Senate, Mr. Dela Rosa said he decided to run for the national position after President Rodrigo R. Duterte gave him the go-ahead during the Hugpong ng Pagbabago convention in Davao City last month.
“’Yun yung hinihintay kong (go signal to run for senator)….All the while I was thinking to be governor of Davao del Sur. ‘Yun yung unang sinabi niya,” he said.
Mr. Dela Rosa said he also took into consideration his ranking in the recent surveys. In a June 2018 Pulse Asia survey, Mr. Dela Rosa placed seventh among the possible candidates Filipinos are inclined to vote for in the midterm polls.
He is also among PDP-Laban’s possible candidates.
If elected, Mr. Dela Rosa said he will push for the reimposition of the death penalty. He said also wants to reform the law enforcement and corrections system.
“Our country has become the favorite place to drop illegal drugs because syndicates know the loose laws against drugs,” he said.
