Jaywalkers, traffic violators face higher penalties in Davao City
TRAFFIC LAW violators, including jaywalkers, will be facing stricter penalties as the city government strengthens enforcement with the deployment of about 450 trained officers of the City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) starting today, Sept. 11. In a statement, the local government said violators of the Anti-Jaywalking Ordinance will now be fined P100 or render four hours of community service. Implementation of the ordinance started in Dec. 2016, but violators were only required to undergo a short seminar. Maria Luisa T. Bermudo, head of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, said those who will undergo community services will be made to clean, or tend city government-run gardens, parks or they will be made to prepare meals for six residential facilities that the city government has set up for children, women and the elderly. “Their services would be of great help to residential centers and at the same time, the experience may teach them a thing or two,” said Ms. Bermudo. CTTMO head Dionisio C. Abude said other violations that the traffic enforcers, in coordination with the Land Transportation Office, will strictly monitor are illegal parking, obstruction and disregarding traffic signs, and speed limits. — Carmelito Q.
