LOS ANGELES — Jhoulys Chacin threw five shutout innings as the Milwaukee Brewers punched their ticket to the Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason with a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
The Brewers improved to 92-67 on the season to earn their first playoff spot in seven years.
They are guaranteed at least a spot in the National League wild card game.
Milwaukee came into the contest a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs for first place in the NL Central and 3 1/2 games ahead of Colorado for the top wild-card slot.
The Cubs also claimed a playoff spot because of the Cardinals’ loss.
St. Louis dropped to 87-71 overall.
The Brewers head home to face the struggling Detroit Tigers in a three-game series starting Friday to end the regular season. — AFP
