Police chief dares criminal gang threatening to attack cops

POLICE DIRECTOR General Ronald M. Dela Rosa challenged an infamous gang associated with the allegedly narcotics trade-linked Parojinog clan on Monday to carry out their plans following intelligence reports that they are plotting to attack cops. “Bring it on. You’re trying to scare us now? You have scared cops for a long time. You have killed so many cops already,” Mr. Dela Rosa said at a press conference yesterday. The Kuratong Baleleng group, involved in various criminal activities, is reportedly out to avenge the deaths of Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo O. Parojinog, Sr. and 4 other family members from a police raid at their home last July 30. Mr. Dela Rosa said they have intelligence reports that at least two boats from Lanao del Norte, supposedly carrying Kuratong Baleleng members, have been deployed for the planned attacks on the police. — Jil Danielle M. One year after

A year ago I wrote a post on Facebook about my initial thoughts on the incoming Rodrigo R. Duterte administration. As a person I tend to be very trusting and given to allowing a new person the benefit of the doubt. And reviewing his speeches, taking away the cursing and the personal attacks, I thought I heard him say the following which I liked. I wrote then:

Saudi Arabia builds new cities in the sand to move beyond crude oil

RIYADH — After relying on oil to fuel its economy for more than half a century, Saudi Arabia is turning to its other abundant natural resource to take it beyond the oil age — desert. The kingdom is converting thousands of square kilometers of sand into new cities as it seeks to diversify away from crude, create jobs and boost investment.

Dolphins woe Cutler

When Jay Cutler “retired” in May to join the Fox broadcast booth, he evidently did so with mixed emotions. From all indications, he wanted to keep playing, ideally for the Bears (whose colors he donned for the last eight years, but whose signing of Mike Glennon from free agency sealed his departure), and then for any franchise on the market for quarterbacks (a not-unreasonable sentiment given the relative dearth of competition). As he explored his on-field options, however, it became clear that he wasn’t in demand; conventional wisdom saw him being passed over for less-talented competition due to his reluctance to assume leadership mantles, his dry personality, and his seeming penchant for snatching defeat from the throes of victory. And so he accepted his fate. “You are either forced to leave or you love the desire to do what’s required to keep going. I’m in between those situations at this point in my life.”
