The pumpkins, polka dots, and anodyne abstraction displayed at Art Stage Singapore failed to inspire the frenzied consumerism associated with art fairs. In a tweet, Brussels-based collector Alain Servais described Singapore Art Week’s main event, which ran from Jan. 12-15 at Marina Bay Sands, as “uneven and low energy” but said that it was less about the art market than Singapore itself.

Man Who Fell to Earth: Limited Collector’s Edition

The three-disc Studiocanal/Lionsgate Limited Collector’s Edition box set of the SF cult classic The Man Who Fell to Earth, starring David Bowie in his first leading film role, includes several new extras along with a booklet, four art cards, a fold-open sheet of production notes and a mini poster. Although the now out-of-print 2005 Criterion Collection edition was more impressive, if only because it offered a commentary track featuring Bowie (along with director Nicolas Roeg and actor Buck Henry) among its bonuses, there’s plenty of fascinating behind-the-scenes material here.
LONG BEFORE other nations in Asia and Africa became republics, we first became the Republic of the Philippines on Jan. 23, 1899. It follows suit that we enjoyed our bill of rights long before our neighbors had their own. But then again, it’s not a question of who did what first, but which nation remembers their history. In this case, the Philippines, according to a local official, has apparently forgotten its important milestones.
