Lecture at Ateneo
BELLAS ARTES PROJECTS (BAP), with support from Ateneo Art Gallery, is pleased to present “I am not Bruce Conner: A Talk by Bruce Jenkins,” a lecture about the film practice of the iconic American artist Bruce Conner (1933–2008) ahead of the upcoming exhibition Bruce Conner: Out of Body, opening at the Outpost on Feb. 24, 2018 with a special screening presentation at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, premiering on March 3, curated by Diana Campbell Betancourt, artistic director of Bellas Artes Projects. The talk will be held on Nov. 20 at noon to 2 p.m. at the Ateneo Art Gallery in Areté. A conversation with Diana Campbell Betancourt will immediately follow. The talk is free and open to the public. Bruce Conner lived and was based in San Francisco, California and was a key part of the San Francisco Beat scene during the late 1950s. He became known for his assemblages (made between 1957–1964) crafted from an assortment of cast-off materials before gaining international admiration for his innovative avant-garde films.
Grisar at Crucible
Hyperbolic Nature, an exhibit of works by Spanish-Chilean artist Cristina Grisar, will run from Nov. 14 to 26 at The Crucible Gallery at SM Megamall. On view will be paintings, photos, sculptures, and jewelry of biomorphic inspiration.
Ateneo Art Gallery show
MUTABLE TRUTHS: Perspectives in Philippine Contemporary Art is on view until Dec. 2 at Ateneo Art Gallery in Areté. It was organized by the La Trobe Art Institute and the Ateneo Art Gallery and features 10 artists from the Philippines, all having visited Australia between 2005 and 2014 through an artist residency they received as winners of the Ateneo Art Awards.
MO_Space X
MO_Space X: Complex Ritual, an exhibit of works by Pardo de Leon and Elaine Roberto-Navas, curated by Nilo Ilarde, opens on Nov. 18 and will run through Dec. 12. The exhibit turns the viewer’s focus on to artists’ artistic processes and practices. Complex Rituals is part of MO_Space X, a series of shows that celebrates the gallery’s 10 years of activities since its opening in 2007. The gallery is located in Bonifacio High Street, Taguig City.
Salonga and the PPO
MUSICAL DIRECTOR, conductor, and arranger Gerard Salonga, currently the director of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra in Manila and Assistant Conductor of Hong Kong Philharmonic, will be the guest conductor for the third concert of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) 2017-2018 season, upon the invitation of PPO music director Yoshikazu Fukumura. The concert will be on Nov. 17 at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. For this concert with the PPO, Salonga chose to do Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess-A Symphonic Picture, J. William’s Catch Me If You Can-Escapades and A. Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor “From the New World.” He will be joined by saxophonist Tots Tolentino in the concert. Curatorial project
CURATED by Federico de Vera is a rare gathering of examples of Philippine fine art, artifacts, religious figures, and miscellaneous objets d’art selected by New York-based gallerist Federico de Vera. It is ongoing until Jan. 28 at the Ayala Museum. Its curation involves the deliberate effort to mingle objects of different periods, styles, forms, and function to present the beauty and complexity of Philippine history and culture.
Komura; book fair
A COLLABORATION between Warehouse Eight and Kwago Bookstore, Komura; book fair is an intimate gathering of independent and specialty bookstores, storytellers, and art shops around the Philippines. Among the book fair’s events Echoes at the Warehouse, a busking session that aims to provide a creative space for musicians to just flow and amplify their unedited thoughts and emotions. Five local musicians, namely Lions and Acrobats, Asch, Alyana Lea Carmela, Niki Colet, and Hoochie Coochie Mikkie, will busk starting at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 18. The book fair will also feature a reading lounge where people can drink coffee, read a book or play some vinyl records from Bear’s Den Records, as well as tiny nooks and corners. Kwago is hosting the first Bookworms Meetup in Manila where book lovers can geek out and trade books. Multi-awarded writer Joachim Antonio will launch his new storytelling project that breaks the “fourth wall” called EXESANONYMOUS, while the Spark Project will hold a crowdfunding workshop for writers and illustrators to publish on their own. The book fair will be on Nov. 18, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Warehouse Eight, La Fuerza compound, Makati City. Door charge is P200. Tickets come with a short story from the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
