THE Port of Manila was 32nd in terms of throughput, according to a ranking of the Top 100 container ports worldwide by maritime intelligence firm Lloyd’s.
In a statement, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said that the Port of Manila jumped four places from 2016, and rose one place on the list of top Asian ports.
The PPA said that Lloyd’s cited the implementation of the Terminal Appointment Booking System (TABS) in 2015 as behind the volume gains at the international terminals of Manila Port, which are the Manila International Container Terminal and the Manila South Harbor. TABS is an electronic platform for shippers using the terminals.
PPA General Manager Jay Daniel R. Santiago said that the improved ranking is an indication of the “efficiency and productivity” of the country’s international gateways.
“The PPA is indeed on course in achieving its vision to have its ports at par with global standards by 2020,” Mr. Santiago said.
This year, the PPA said it is anticipating cargo volume growth of about 5%-7%, upgrading a previous forecast of flat growth made early this year. – Patrizia Paola C. Marcelo
