Taiwanese ex-gov’t official wanted for fraud caught in Subic
THE BUREAU of Immigration (BI) is set to deport another former high-ranking foreign government official, this time from Taiwan, who is wanted for fraud in his country. Immigration Commissioner Jaime H. Morente said Taiwanese national Wu Chien Pao, 68, was arrested by the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit last Jan. 16 at the Subic Freeport Zone in Zambales following the request from the Taipei Economic Cultural Office in Manila. Mr. Wu was identified as the former speaker of Tainan Country and has been wanted for fraud since Oct. 2014. “He will be deported for being an undesirable and undocumented alien,” the BI chief said, adding that Mr. Wu’s passport already expired in April 2017. The BI said Taiwanese news outlets described his offense as “one of the largest issues to hit Taiwanese baseball” after he was accused of fixing the results of Chinese Professional Baseball League games that involved popular players in his country. He allegedly did this in connivance with illegal gambling syndicates. As a former speaker, he headed 57 elected councilors in Tainan County and was chosen by fellow councilors through voting. Last Jan. 13, the BI, together with the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission, arrested Chinese Xie Haojie, a former general manager of a state-owned enterprise who was wanted for embezzling an amount equivalent to P11-billion. — Vann Marlo M.
