THE PHILIPPINE government yesterday assured that it will provide assistance to Filipinos who may be affected by US President Donald J. Trump’s decision to revoke the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto C. Abella said in a statement that the Department of Foreign Affairs, through embassy and consular officials and staff, is closely coordinating with the members of the Filipino community in the US after Mr. Trump announced on Wednesday that he will revoke the DACA, a program initiated under the Obama administration that allowed illegal immigrants who entered the country as minors to receive leeway from deportation and eligibility for a work permit. “We will provide assistance, through the use of the Assistance to Nationals Fund and the Legal Assistance Fund, to Filipinos who may end up getting deported as a result of Washington’s decision,” Mr. Abella said. — Rosemarie A.
