Catholic diocese to look into child abuse case of priest
THE DIOCESE of Antipolo has vowed to look into the alleged child abuse case filed against a priest, who carries a monsignor title. In a statement released over the weekend, the diocese said it is “looking into the matter involving the arrest of Msgr. Arnel [F.] Lagarejos as allegedly identified as a suspect in an entrapment operation in Marikina City.” “[W]e assure the public that we respect the necessary procedures as provided by law in order to further investigate the matter,” it added. Mr. Lagarejos was arrested in an entrapment operation by the Eastern Police District with members of the Department of Social Welfare and Development last July 29. The operation was intended to apprehend minors suspected to be involved in prostitution, and the monsignor was arrested in his vehicle with a 13-year-old girl who was reportedly a victim. “Alleged violations against the Anti Child Abuse Law and Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act are serious allegations that have to be dealt by the authorities accordingly,” the diocese said. Mr. Lagarejos is currently the parish priest of the Parish of St. John the Baptist in Taytay, Rizal. The diocese also appealed for sobriety amid the controversy, saying, “Let us refrain from issuing unnecessary comments that might worsen the situation. Instead, we appeal for all the faithful to pray that the truth may come out.” — Kristine Joy V. Patag
