BACK-TO-BACK NCAA champion College of St. Benilde (CSB) played as good as advertised in a rousing debut while Mindanao pride Jose Maria College Foundation (JMCF) stunned Lyceum in Day 2 of the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) National Invitationals yesterday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

The Lady Blazers swept the Lady Kingfishers, 25-20, 25-15, 25-18 with the Lady Royals from Davao pulling off a gigantic 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 26-24 over the Lady Pirates, who finished runner-up behind CSB in the NCAA Season 98.

Zamantha Nolasco hammered 19 points on eight attacks, six blocks and five aces as CSB gained a piece of Pool D lead with opening-day winner Enderun Colleges.

Clydel Catarig (11) and Corrine Apostol (9) pumped in key contributions for the Lady Blazers, who needed only 68 minutes to score the win even with the limited action of aces Gayle Pascual and Jade Gentapa.

But the bigger triumph was bagged by the spikers from Davao led by Johma Mae Palermo in leading the Lady Royals to an upset of the Lady Pirates.

Ms. Palermo dropped 18 points on 13 hits and five aces, while Michaela Oliveros (15) and Dianne Uriel Brion (11) chipped in help for JMCF in improving to 1-1 in Pool C after a 25-17, 25-11, 25-17 debut loss to Adamson.

In the other match, the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta bested CESAFI runner-up University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 23-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-16, behind Winnine Bedaña’s 20 points.

Charmaine Mae Ocado (18), Shaila Allaine Omipon (16) and NCAA MVP Mary Rhose Dapol (15) added ample support for the Lady Altas, who moved to 1-1 in Pool A after 25-11, 25-17, 25-12 defeat against UAAP champion La Salle. — John Bryan Ulanday
