More troops reinforce rescue efforts in flood-hit Spain

PAIPORTA, Spain — Another 2,500 soldiers arrived in the flood-hit east of Spain on Monday to reinforce efforts to locate bodies and clear debris, as government officials traded blame over how the worst flooding in decades has been handled and as first aid packages were being readied.

Public anger is mounting over the disaster that has killed at least 217 people with dozens of others still unaccounted for. Almost all of the deaths occurred in the Valencia region and more than 60 in the suburb of Paiporta.

The army sent about 5,000 soldiers over the weekend to help distribute food and water, clean up streets and guard against looters and a further 2,500 would join them, Defence Minister Margarita Robles told state-owned radio RNE.

A warship with 104 marine infantry soldiers as well as trucks with food and water arrived in Valencia port even as a strong hailstorm pummeled Barcelona some 300 km (186 miles) to the north.

On Monday evening, Spanish minister Felix Bolanos from the Socialist Party said Tuesday’s cabinet would declare some of the worst hit villages by the floods in the regions of Valencia, Andalusia, Castile La Mancha and Catalonia as “severely affected areas” so that they can be entitled to emergency funds.

He added that the government would approve on Tuesday a package of relief measures to help people cope with the situation without giving further details.

Later, the regional head of Valencia, Carlos Mazon, said that his region would separately hand out each household 6,000 euros ($6,524) and make available at least 200,000 euros to help each town face urgent spending needs.

In total, Mazon, of the conservative People’s Party, said the region would request from Spain’s central government a first aid package worth around 31.4 billion euros, including funds to reconstruct key infrastructure.

On Monday, airport operator AENA said about 50 flights due to take off from Barcelona’s partially flooded El Prat airport were cancelled or severely delayed, while 17 due to land there were diverted. Some local train services were also canceled.

Rescuers used drones and water pumps to search and clear underground carparks and garages. They also scanned river mouths where currents may have deposited more bodies.

“With these drones we can send them inside the garages and have a first visual of what’s going on,” police spokesperson Ricardo Gutierrez said.

Opposition politicians accused the left-wing central government of acting too slowly to warn residents and send in rescuers.

Mazon on Monday had previously said the Hydrographic Confederation of Jucar (CHJ), which measures the flow of rivers and ravines for the state, had cancelled a planned alert three times.

But Madrid said the CHJ does not issue flood risk alerts, which are the responsibility of Spain’s regional governments.

DELAYED RESPONSE
Locals criticized late alerts from authorities about the dangers and a perceived delayed response by emergency services.

But General Javier Marcos, commander of the army’s emergency response services, said he had ordered 500 soldiers to be deployed within 15 minutes of seeing the flood warning on Tuesday who were able to enter hard-hit areas.

“The degree of destruction is so great that mobility is limited,” he said. “It is so complex that it requires two things: discipline and patience.”

On Sunday, some residents in Paiporta slung mud at Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and King Felipe and his wife, Queen Letizia, chanting: “murderers, murderers!”

The prime minister was also struck during the protests, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said in an interview on TVE, blaming a handful of extremists for the trouble.

“The majority of people gathered are absolutely peaceful people who have lost everything and whose anger we evidently understand,” Mr. Grande-Marlaska said.

Locals in Paiporta said anger boiled over because they felt authorities were using them for a photo opportunity.

They denied that the crowd was full of extremists.

Belen, a 50-year-old supermarket cashier who lost both her cars during the flood, said she was angry with both the national and regional governments about how slowly help has arrived.

“That’s what hurts us, that they only come here for a photo,” she said. “They’re all the same dog with different collars. They’re all scum.”

A protest planned in Valencia on Saturday will call for Mazon to step down.

A daily protest in Madrid outside the headquarters of Sanchez’s Socialist party drew more people on Sunday, about 600, due to anger over the floods, according to El Pais newspaper.

The anger vented against all sides reflects a general disillusionment with the political class, analysts at Eurointelligence wrote in a note on Monday. “If the aftermath turns into a big finger-pointing exercise, it will probably deepen that anti-politics sentiment,” it said.

Lack of clarity over the numbers of dead and missing has added to frustration. A landline has been set up for relatives to report the missing, with the government saying “dozens and dozens” are still unaccounted for.

Coroner services on Monday said 190 autopsies had been performed, and 111 people identified.

The midweek torrential rains caused rivers to swell, engulfing streets and ground floors of buildings, and sweeping away cars and masonry in tides of mud.

Sonia Luque, coordinator of the Network of Road Assistance Companies, said more than 100,000 cars were damaged.

It was the worst flood-related disaster in Europe in five decades. Scientists say extreme weather is more frequent due to climate change. Meteorologists think the warming of the Mediterranean, which increases water evaporation, plays a key role in making torrential rains more severe. — Reuters

Britain to ban smoking outside schools, hospitals and playgrounds

WIRESTOCK-FREEPIK

LONDON — The British government plans to ban smoking outside schools, hospitals and playgrounds as a way of reducing the pressure on the state-run National Health Service (NHS) and the cost to taxpayers.

The government’s Tobacco and Vapes Bill will be introduced to parliament on Tuesday involving some of the world’s strictest anti-smoking rules, including banning younger people from smoking.

However, the government abandoned plans for a ban on smoking outside pubs and cafes after concerns were raised about the impact on the hospitality industry.

“Unless we act to help people stay healthy, the rising tide of ill-health in our society threatens to overwhelm and bankrupt our NHS,” the health minister Wes Streeting said in a statement. “This historic legislation will save thousands of lives.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in August he supported the idea of banning smoking in outdoor spaces, such as pub gardens.

The British Beer and Pub Association said that plan was “deeply concerning” and would have a “devastating impact” on venues already struggling with rising costs.

A poll by YouGov in September found more than three-quarters of people in Britain would support a ban on smoking outside hospitals but were more divided on introducing the measures in pub gardens.

The government said it will be given powers in the new legislation to ban smoking outside specific outdoor spaces such as children’s playgrounds, schools and hospitals. But the plans will be subject to consultation.

The previous Conservative government had announced similar measures to create the first smoke-free generation. However, those plans failed to become law before the general election in the summer when the party lost power.

The new legislation ensures anyone aged 15 this year, or younger, will be banned from buying cigarettes, and aims to make vapes less appealing to children.

The government said smoking causes about 80,000 deaths a year and costs the economy 21.8 billion pounds ($28.22 billion) a year in lost productivity and health and care costs — far outweighing tax receipts.

Britain banned smoking in almost all enclosed public spaces, including bars and workplaces, in 2007.

Cancer Research UK said this led to an estimated 1.9 million fewer smokers, and research in the British Medical Journal estimated there were 1,200 fewer hospital admissions for heart attacks the following year. — Reuters

North Korea fires multiple short-range missiles, condemns military drills

FREEPIK

SEOUL/TOKYO — North Korea fired at least seven short-range ballistic missiles on Tuesday off its east coast, Japan’s Defense minister said, soon after Pyongyang condemned military drills by its rivals and just hours before the US election.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister condemned the drills involving the United States, Japan and South Korea, in a report published on state media KCNA.

At least seven missiles flew to an altitude of 100 km (62 miles) and covered a range of 400 km before falling outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone into the ocean, Japan’s Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said.

They were fired at around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday (2230 GMT on Monday) from the vicinity of Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The United States was consulting closely with South Korea, Japan and other regional allies after the launches, and continued to monitor the situation, the US military said.

The latest launch follows North Korea’s test last week of a huge new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile dubbed Hwasong-19, and comes hours before voting opens in the US presidential election.

“If the ICBM was meant for the US, the latest ballistic missiles are for South Korea,” said Yang Moo-jin, president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.

“Directly, it is to protest the joint air drills by South Korea, US and Japan. Indirectly it is to show off their presence last minute before the US presidential election,” said Mr. Yang, who also saw the intent as to deflect the international community’s attention away from criticizing the dispatch of North Korean troops to Russia.

North Korean state media KCNA on Tuesday said Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, condemned the recent military drills by the United States, Japan and South Korea as threats and said they justify North Korea’s nuclear reinforcement.

The missile launch also came after Russian President Vladimir Putin unexpectedly met North Korea’s foreign minister Choe Son Hui on Monday.

During Mr. Putin’s surprise meeting in the Kremlin with Choe, the pair shook hands for a full minute at a time of mounting concern in the West that North Korean soldiers are about to enter the Ukraine war on Moscow’s side.

On Monday, the US also called out Russia and China at the United Nations (UN) Security Council for “shamelessly protecting” and emboldening North Korea to further violate UN sanctions by advancing its ballistic missile, nuclear, and weapons of mass destruction programmes.

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun noted late last month that North Korea “would want to exaggerate their existence around the season of the US presidential election before and after the election” by show of force such as an intercontinental missile test or another nuclear test. — Reuters

NATO-type Southeast Asian security group not feasible, Philippines minister says

DEFENSE SECRETARY GILBERTO C. TEODORO, JR. — DND

 – A security grouping in Southeast Asia similar to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is not possible at present given diverging interests and alliances in the region, the Philippines‘ Defense Secretary said on Tuesday.

Asked about the prospect of a NATO equivalent in Southeast Asia, Gilberto Teodoro told a security forum that ASEAN’s complex “dichotomies and divergence in country interests” would make it challenging to set up a unified military alliance.

“For example, we have a pre-ASEAN defense alliance with the United States. We continue to build alliances with like-minded countries,” he said in a security forum in Manila.

“Other ASEAN countries have built alliances with China.”

The remarks come after Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, prior to taking office, had floated the idea of establishing an “Asian NATO”, a proposal that has gained no traction and was rejected by the United States and India.

Japan’s foreign minister later said such an idea was not aimed at countering a specific country, when asked if it had China in mind. Teodoro said he would rather ASEAN recognized that China was “overstepping” in the South China Sea. There have been recent clashes over territorial claims with the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.

China and U.S. ally the Philippines have been at loggerheads over a series of confrontations near disputed areas in the South China Sea. Manila has accused China’s coast guard of aggression and Beijing has said it is responding to what it calls repeated provocations and territorial incursions.

“Getting some principles or some reactions regarding the expansive activities and admittedly illegal activities of China in the South China Sea is a very good first step, and that’s what we should be working on,” Mr. Teodoro said.

The Philippines has called on Southeast Asian leaders and China to urgently speed up negotiations on a code of conduct for the South China Sea, to manage differences and reduce tension.

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea have no legal basis, siding with the Philippines which brought the case. Beijing has rejected the ruling. – Reuters

Toxic smog wreathes India’s capital as winter nears

CROWDED New Delhi street — WIKIPEDIA/UNSPLASH

 – A toxic smog shrouded the Indian capital on Tuesday, driving air quality in some areas into the “severe” range ahead of winter, when cold air traps pollutants and brings a spike in respiratory illnesses.

The mix of smoke, emissions, and dust is an annual problem for authorities in New Delhi, with vehicles, construction dust, and smoke from farm fires in the adjoining northern states of Punjab and Haryana among the major contributors.

“The outlook for the subsequent six days: the air quality is likely to be in the ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category,” said the earth sciences ministry.

The city’s overall score on an air quality index kept by India’s top pollution authorities was ‘very poor’ at 384, the ministry added, and was likely to stay there until Thursday.

An index range of 401 to 500 falls into the ‘severe’ category, implying it affects healthy people, but is more serious for those already fighting disease.

Ministry data showed farm fires have increasingly swelled the pollution over the last three days, for a share of more than 23% on Monday, from about 15% on Saturday.

About a third of the city’s 39 monitoring stations showed a ‘severe’ score of more than 400 on Tuesday, said the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), well short of an air quality score of zero to 50 that it rates as ‘good’.

Swiss group IQAir also rated Delhi the world’s second most polluted city on Tuesday, after Lahore in neighboring Pakistan, where authorities also took emergency measures in the wake of Sunday’s unprecedented pollution levels.

The government in the eastern province of Punjab, home to Lahore, has blamed deteriorating air quality on pollution wafting in from India, an issue it has vowed to take up with its neighbor through the foreign ministry. – Reuters

Burberry’s new CEO faces outlet store and pricing dilemmas

– Burberry’s new CEO Joshua Schulman faces an uphill task to turn around the British luxury brand whose sales have declined sharply while its share price has dropped 40% this year, stoking speculation it could be a takeover target.

The luxury sector as a whole has been hit as high interest rates and inflation have increased consumer reluctance to spend, but Burberry has underperformed its peers.

Its shares rallied on Monday, however, following a report Italy’s Moncler was considering a bid. Both companies declined to comment.

Mr. Schulman, the company’s fourth CEO in 10 years, previously held the top job at Coach and at Michael Kors, and is expected to set out a new strategy for Burberry at half-year results on Nov 14.

Some investors and analysts say Burberry’s roughly 56 outlet stores should be top priority for Mr. Schulman as they could detract from attempts to push the brand to the higher end of the luxury space.

Burberry uses outlet stores in China, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States to clear excess stock, and sell previous-year collections of Burberry’s classic trench coats, check pattern scarves and bags at steep discounts.

“Burberry has been trying to elevate the brand, but the outlet exposure jeopardized and compromised this strategy,” said HSBC analyst Aurelie Husson-Dumoutier.

“A trench coat from the 2019 collection is not that different to the 2024 collection, so if I can buy it at half the price, why wouldn’t I?” she added.

Cutting its outlet exposure would be costly as the stores account for close to 30% of sales and 50% of profitability, according to HSBC estimates.

But it could be necessary if Burberry is aiming for the higher end, which would also mean a higher share price valuation, analysts say.

“If Burberry were to go down the premium brand route (like Coach), the price-to-earnings multiple the market applies to these brands can be half that of true luxury players,” said Bank of America analyst Ashley Wallace.

“The complication is that Burberry is a little bit in the middle right now.”

CREATIVE DIRECTION

While Burberry has had a series of CEOs in a decade, the brand has also seen three creative directors in the last seven years – from Christopher Bailey to Riccardo Tisci, and now Daniel Lee – each bringing different styles, logos and fonts that some say have confused the brand identity.

Lee, who joined the brand two years ago, made his name at Bottega Veneta with a series of top-selling “it” shoes and bags like the 3,140-pound ($4,071) “Jodie” that reimagined the Italian brand’s trademark intrecciato woven leather and drew in Gen-Z shoppers.

Lee’s designs for Burberry have yet to find the same level of success and rumors have swirled about his future at the brand. Burberry Chairman Gerry Murphy told analysts in July that they “should not assume any change in creative leadership”.

Sasha Kachanova, consumer analyst at asset manager abrdn, said Burberry is known more for apparel and less for leather goods, so delivering a viral bag or shoe might take longer.

Tom Delic, portfolio manager at Momentum, which holds Burberry shares, said he would like to see “a refocus on the core ranges Burberry is known for”.

He also questioned Burberry’s pricing, saying it had raised prices too fast and too hard, potentially alienating aspirational luxury shoppers, especially younger ones.

“It is a classic brand but the collection they have doesn’t resonate much with the younger audience,” said 26-year-old Kishica Arora, while shopping in the Burberry outlet in Hackney, east London, which sold items such as the “Snip” quilted crossbody bag for 1,795 pounds ($2,327.40), half the list price of 3,590 pounds.

She was finding “great deals” on discounted T-shirts and other basic items featuring Burberry’s classic plaid, but said she would not buy Burberry at full price.

“I would rather go to Jacquemus, because that’s a little more trendy,” she said. – Reuters

Philippines calls evacuations, puts troops on standby for Typhoon Yinxing

Source: PAGASA

– The Philippines ordered evacuations, stockpiled food and put soldiers on standby in preparation for Typhoon Yinxing, officials said on Tuesday, as the storm barrels towards northeastern towns where it could make landfall this week.

The storm centre of the typhoon, packing winds of 120 kph (75 mph) was estimated to be 590 km (367 miles) from the eastern town of Baler in the province of Aurora, state weather agency Pag-asa said.

The local government ministry had called for those in remote communities to evacuate in advance, as rescuers could prove unable to reach them during the onslaught of the storm, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said.

“Various government agencies have combined efforts to issue early warnings, plan ahead and pre-position the goods and services needed,” Mr. Teodoro told a briefing.

Food is being stockpiled, soldiers are on standby to help in rescue efforts, and dams are releasing water ahead of time to prevent flooding, officials added.

The storm could hit land between Thursday evening and Friday morning around the northern province of Cagayan, bringing torrential rain to towns in its path, said weather agency official Nathaniel Servando, though it could still swerve away.

About 24 million people could be directly affected by the typhoon, said civil defense administrator Ariel Nepomuceno.

The storm is the third in less than a month to menace the Philippines, after Storm Trami and Super Typhoon Kong-rey pound the main island of Luzon in recent weeks, killing 151, with 21 missing, civil defense figures show.

“We have learned a lot. That’s why our processes have been adjusted,” Mr. Teodoro added.

Around 20 tropical storms strike the Philippines each year on average, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and deadly landslides. – Reuters

Wrong claims by Musk on US election got 2 billion views on X in 2024, report says

 – False or misleading claims by billionaire Elon Musk about the U.S. election have amassed 2 billion views on social media platform X this year, according to a report by non-profit group Center for Countering Digital Hate.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT

Government officials and voting rights advocates in the U.S. have warned about election-related misinformation while urging social media platforms, including X, to take steps to remove any false information about the vote.

Mr. Musk, who owns X, is a supporter for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump who faces Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris in what polls show to be a tight race for the White House. Mr. Musk endorsed Mr. Trump in July.

BY THE NUMBERS

At least 87 of Mr. Musk’s posts this year have promoted claims about the U.S. election that fact-checkers have rated as false or misleading, amassing 2 billion views, according to the Center for Countering Digital Hate.

Mr. Musk’s political posts have amassed 17.1 billion views since he endorsed Donald Trump in July – over twice as many views as all the U.S. political campaigning ads that X has recorded in its political ads disclosure dataset in the same period, the non-profit group added.

X did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CONTEXT

Among posts by Mr. Musk that were described in the report as false or misleading were those claiming “voter importation” such as “a triple digit” rise over the past four years in undocumented immigrants in battleground states, as well as posts questioning “the integrity of voting.”

Last week, the same non-profit said the crowd-sourced fact-checking feature of Mr. Musk’s X, Community Notes, was not countering false claims about the U.S. election. – Reuters

After SpaceX’s requests, Taiwanese suppliers move manufacturing abroad, sources say

REUTERS

HANOI/TAIPEI – Elon Musk’s SpaceX asked Taiwanese suppliers to transfer manufacturing off the island, leading to some relocating portions of their supply chain, according to sources employed by and close to the equipment makers and corporate documents.

A source at a company that is one of the numerous subcontractors that provide components for SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet products said SpaceX asked their manufacturers to produce outside of Taiwan because of geopolitical risks, pushing at least one to move production to Vietnam.

A second source who collaborates with Taiwanese satellite component makers on the island said suppliers were directly asked by SpaceX to transfer manufacturing abroad.

Chin-Poon Industrial, a satellite component maker which said it was recently a SpaceX supplier, told Reuters the U.S. company requested they move their manufacturing from Taiwan to Thailand for new orders “mostly due to geopolitical considerations”. It did not elaborate.

The sources declined to be identified because the information was not public. SpaceX did not reply to requests for comment.

SpaceX’s requests place a renewed focus on the contentious relationship Musk has had with Taiwan, especially after he said last year it is an “integral part” of China, drawing sharp criticism from the Taiwanese government.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and has staged almost daily military drills around it over the past five years and has never renounced taking the island by force. Taiwan rejects China’s sovereignty claims.

China’s drills have increased in intensity since 2022, with the latest war games it carried out last month replicating a blockade of the island. Amid the potential for devastating disruptions to their supply chains, some Taiwanese companies in the strategic satellite and semiconductor industries are taking steps to reduce their reliance on domestic manufacturing.

A Vietnam-based investment adviser told Reuters in October SpaceX representatives said in a private meeting in March 2023 the company was interested in setting up a manufacturing hub for satellite equipment in Vietnam and sought advice on protecting intellectual property.

When contacted by Reuters about Taiwanese SpaceX suppliers moving abroad, Taiwan’s economy ministry responded, “Short-term political factors should not affect the supply chain relationship between international satellite companies and Taiwan manufacturers.”

VIETNAM EXPANSION

Taiwanese SpaceX supplier Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC) this year began producing routers and other network gear for Starlink at its factory in the northern Vietnamese province of Hanam, about an hour south of Hanoi, two of the plant’s workers and a contractor said.

WNC’s expansion in Vietnam is largely due to orders from SpaceX, said one of the workers.

The Hanam factory plans to at least double its 3,000-strong workforce, the contractor and one of the workers said. Outside the factory, several banners advertised job offers at the plant, Reuters reporters observed in mid-October.

The first source familiar with SpaceX’s requests to move out of Taiwan is an employee of a Vietnam-based foreign-owned supplier whose components for printed circuit boards are in Starlink’s ground equipment through WNC-made components.

The source said a SpaceX vendor they work with that supplies WNC was directly told by SpaceX to produce outside of the island.

WNC declined to comment, citing customer confidentiality. Its latest annual report in April said: “In the face of geopolitical risks and ever-changing customer requirements, WNC has continued to expand its global manufacturing capabilities”.

Universal Microwave Technology, another SpaceX supplier and manufacturer of satellite components, invested in a factory in Vietnam this year, according to a Taiwanese official and public documents from the company.

Universal Microwave Technology declined to comment on individual customers, citing confidentiality agreements, but said it was expanding its presence in Southeast Asia, including new factories in Thailand and Vietnam.

“The planning of overseas production capacity will help customers reduce their doubts about geographical risks, gain customer recognition, and increase the breadth of cooperation with customers,” it said.

Taiwan has a large satellite industry, with about 50 companies producing ground equipment and sensitive components, according to the economy ministry and industry data. The government estimates the sector’s output exceeded T$200 billion ($6.23 billion) last year.

SpaceX has about a dozen direct suppliers from Taiwan, which rely on dozens of domestic vendors, the source who collaborates with the island’s satellite industry said.

Vietnam’s government in September said SpaceX wanted to invest $1.5 billion in the country, though the timing and purposes of the actual investments remain unclear.

Shenmao Technology, a supplier of soldering materials for printed circuit boards, which has provided components to SpaceX, said in April it would spend $5 million to set up a unit in Vietnam, without saying who its clients would be for products from that facility. The company did not respond to a request for comment. – Reuters

Harris closes campaign in Philadelphia, Trump in Michigan on eve of deadlocked election

PHILADELPHIA/GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – Donald Trump and Kamala Harris both predicted victory as they campaigned across Pennsylvania and other battleground states on Monday in the final, frantic day of an exceptionally close U.S. presidential election.

The campaign has seen head-spinning twists: two assassination attempts and a felony conviction for Republican former President Trump, and Democratic Vice President Harris’ surprise elevation to the top of the ticket after President Joe Biden, 81, dropped his reelection bid under pressure from his own party. More than $2.6 billion has been spent to sway voters’ minds since March, according to AdImpact, an analytics firm.

Nevertheless, opinion polls show Mr. Trump, 78, and Ms. Harris, 60, virtually even. The winner may not be known for days after Tuesday’s vote, though Mr. Trump has already signaled that he will attempt to fight any defeat, as he did in 2020.

Both candidates predicted victory as they converged on Pennsylvania on Monday to urge supporters who have not yet cast their ballots to show up on Election Day. The state offers the largest share of votes in the Electoral College of any of the seven battleground states expected to determine the outcome.

Mr. Trump also campaigned in North Carolina and Michigan on the final full day of the campaign and was due to return to his home in Palm Beach, Florida, to vote and await election results.

Ms. Harris scheduled five campaign stops in Pennsylvania, including two cities where Mr. Trump also visited, Reading and Pittsburgh.

She ended the day in Philadelphia with a star-studded event at the “Rocky steps” of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the site of a famous scene from the movie “Rocky.”

Despite enjoying the support of A-list celebrities including Lady Gaga and Oprah Winfrey, both of whom rallied the Philadelphia crowd before Harris took the stage, Ms. Harris called herself the underdog who like Rocky was ready to “climb to victory.”

“The momentum is on our side,” Ms. Harris told a crowd that chanted back, “We will win.”

“Tonight, then, we finish as we started: with optimism, with energy, with joy,” Harris said, predicting one of the closest elections in U.S. history.

In Allentown, Ms. Harris appealed to the city’s substantial Puerto Rican community who were outraged by insults from a comedian at a Trump rally last week. Later she went door-knocking in Reading and held a brief rally in Pittsburgh, where pop star Katy Perry played a set.

Mr. Trump led his fourth and final rally after midnight before a packed arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the third presidential election in a row that he has used the city for his last event.

He promoted his signature issues of increasing border security while attacking the economic record of the Biden-Harris years.

It was also likely the last campaign rally of his career, since he has said he does not plan to run for president again should he fail attain the high office in Tuesday’s election.

“This is the last one,” said Mr. Trump, estimating he had conducted 930 rallies since he began his first campaign in 2015.

“If we get out our people, it’s over, there’s nothing they can do about it. … To make you feel a little guilty, we would only have you to blame,” added Trump, who received a boost earlier in the night with an endorsement from podcaster Joe Rogan.

GENDER GAP

The Harris campaign says its internal data shows undecided voters are breaking in their favor, and says it has seen an increase in early voting among core parts of its coalition, including young voters and voters of color.

Trump campaign officials said they were monitoring early-voting results that show more women have voted than men. That is significant given Ms. Harris led Mr. Trump by 50% to 38% among female registered voters, according to an October Reuters/Ipsos poll, while Trump led among men 48% to 41%.

“Men must vote!” the world’s richest person Elon Musk, a prominent Trump supporter, wrote on his X social media platform.

Mr. Trump’s campaign has outsourced most of the voter outreach work to outside groups, including one run by Mr. Musk, which have focused on contacting supporters who do not reliably participate in elections, rather than undecided voters.

A Pennsylvania judge ruled that Mr. Musk could continue his $1 million voter giveaway in the state, which a local prosecutor said amounted to an illegal lottery.

Mr. Trump has vowed to protect women “whether the women like it or not” and said that the decision of whether to ban abortion should be up to individual states, after the conservative majority he cemented on the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 ended the nationwide right to abortion. In Reading, he vowed to keep transgender athletes out of women’s sports, as supporters waved pink “Women for Trump” signs behind him.

One Trump campaign official said they thought the Republican would carry North Carolina, Georgia and Arizona, which would still require him to carry one of battleground states in the Rust Belt – Michigan, Wisconsin or Pennsylvania – to win the White House.

Republicans also appeared to be posting strong early-vote results in Nevada, and have been heartened by robust early-voting numbers in the hurricane-ravaged western counties of North Carolina.

“The numbers show that President Trump is going to win this race,” senior adviser Jason Miller told reporters. “We feel very good about where things are.”

Mr. Trump and his allies, who falsely claim his 2020 defeat was the result of fraud, have spent months laying the groundwork to again challenge the result if he loses. He has promised “retribution” if elected, spoken of prosecuting his political rivals and described Democrats as the “enemy from within.”

Harris campaign officials said his attempts to allege fraud will fail. “Voters select the president, not Donald Trump,” Dana Remus, a campaign legal adviser, told reporters. – Reuters

Philippines to host 4th World Marketing Forum and 53rd National Marketing Conference

Philippine Marketing Association brings global marketing leaders together for discussions on industry trends, technology, and sustainability

The Philippines is set to host Marketing Wars: Episode 6.0 and Beyond,” an integration of the 4th World Marketing Forum (WMF) and the 53rd National Marketing Conference (NMC), focusing on the evolving global marketing landscape. Organized by the Philippine Marketing Association (PMA) in collaboration with the Asia Marketing Federation (AMF), the events are scheduled sequentially on Nov. 6-7, 2024 at the Newport Performing Arts Theatre, Newport World Resorts, Pasay City, bringing together around 1,700 marketing professionals and industry leaders worldwide.

The two-day conference explores the clash between human ingenuity and advanced technology, where marketers navigate the battle for operational excellence. It aims to examine how marketing professionals can harness the power of human creativity alongside the precision of machine intelligence, providing actionable insights to wield both effectively in today’s fast-paced landscape. Attendees will also gain strategies to navigate the rapidly changing marketing environment, covering topics from AI integration to sustainability-driven business models.

“Our goal this year is to highlight the balance marketers must strike between the creativity of the human spirit and the capabilities of technology,” said Kathy P. Mercado, CPM, president of the Philippine Marketing Association. “By exploring how we can blend human insight with machine intelligence, we hope to empower our participants to develop strategic solutions for today’s complex marketing challenges.”

The WMF on Nov. 6 will center on “The Force of Marketing Awakens: The Strategic War for Excellence,” featuring a keynote address by Philip Kotler (via Zoom) and a live address by Hermawan Kartajaya, founder of AMF, on “Setting the Stage for Marketing 6.0.” Discussions will cover topics such as immersive marketing, integrating physical-digital experiences, overcoming digital fatigue, and achieving operational excellence. Other notable speakers include Roger Wang, president of the Marketing Institute of Singapore; Hooi Den Huan, co-founder of the Asia Marketing Federation Foundation; and Syed Ferhat Anwar, president of the Asia Marketing Federation. The event is expected to draw around 150 foreign delegates from AMF’s member countries across Asia, including Singapore, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Japan, Korea, Nepal, Mongolia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

“It is our honor to host the World Marketing Forum as part of our 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Association,” said Sy Bryan Lato, CPM-Asia, PMA immediate past president, and director for International Affairs. “The bid was done during a board meeting of the Asia Marketing Federation, and we are excited to show Filipino hospitality and present the world with the richness of Filipino culture.”

On Nov. 7, the NMC, now in its 53rd year, will focus on “The Next Gen Empire Strikes Back: Defining the Future of Marketing.” The event will center on three core topics: Marketing to NXT Gen (covering Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers), NXT Gen Marketing Best Practices (including Purposeful Marketing, SDG & Sustainability, and Journey-based Marketing), and NXT Gen Marketing Tools (exploring technologies such as RPA and AI). Industry leaders, including Jim Lafferty, Global CEO of FINE Hygienics, along with executives from global MNCs, FMCGs, and top Agora award winners, will share strategies on the future of marketing leadership. The day will conclude with discussions on sustainability marketing and a session titled “Winning the NXT Level Marketing Wars,” featuring Donald Patrick Lim, president of DITO CME, and insights from Agora awardees on future-ready marketing strategies.

“The two marketing events go beyond simply exchanging ideas; they serve as a battleground where strategies are put to the test and new paradigms are shaped,” said Donald Patrick Lim, overall conference chairperson. “The ‘Marketing Wars’ theme underscores the need for marketers to confront the challenges of a rapidly evolving landscape, equipping them with the insights and skills necessary to be future-ready.”

In the lead-up to the event, PMA secured key partnerships and formalized agreements on Oct. 2 with key organizations, including the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce, Indonesian Embassy, Department of Tourism, Newport World Resorts, Globaltronics, and GCash. The ceremonial signing was graced by His Excellency Dato Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony, Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines.
