Germany rescues World Cup hopes with late Kroos goal

SOCHI, RUSSIA — Toni Kroos rescued Germany’s World Cup hopes in dramatic fashion on Saturday, curling in a stunning free kick deep into injury time to seal a 2-1 win against Sweden.
Germany’s late, late show keeps Joachim Loew’s on course to be the first team to retain the title in 56 years but their fate is still not entirely in their own hands.
The defending champions were in desperate trouble when Ola Toivonen lifted the ball over Manuel Neuer to put the Swedes ahead in the first half in Sochi after Kroos gave the ball away.
Germany, looking far sharper than it did in its opening defeat against Mexico, piled forward and eventually earned their reward when Marco Reus reacted quickly to turn the ball in shortly after the interval.
Despite incessant pressure, Loew’s men could not find the goal they craved as time ticked away and Germany’s task was made more difficult when key defender Jerome Boateng was sent off in the 82nd minute for a second yellow card.
But Kroos had other ideas, stepping up in the 95th minute to curl a free kick from the left edge of the penalty area into the top corner, beating the despairing dive of Robin Olsen, who had been outstanding in the Swedish goal.
“We never lost hope. I think there was a bit of luck there with the goal scored in stoppage time, but it was a result of our belief in ourselves,” said Loew. “Despite the adversity, the team kept their cool and turned it around.”
Germany — level with Sweden on three points, with Mexico on six points — must now beat South Korea in Kazan on Wednesday and hope the other result in Group F goes their way.
MEXICO WIN
Mexico showed that its shock defeat of Germany last weekend was no fluke with a 2-1 defeat of South Korea in Rostov-on-Don.
West Ham striker Javier Hernandez grabbed his 50th international goal while Los Angeles FC forward Carlos Vela was also on target from the penalty spot.
South Korea scored a late consolation strike from Tottenham’s Son Heung-min, but it was too little, too late for the Asian giants, who desperately needed a victory after losing to Sweden in their opening game.
LUKAKU, HAZARD STRIKE
In the first game of the day, Belgium produced an imperious display to overwhelm Tunisia, with Premier League stars Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard scoring two apiece in a 5-2 rout at Moscow’s Spartak Stadium.
The one-sided victory cemented Belgium’s place at the top of Group G and all but guaranteed their place in the knockout rounds, with just one group game, against England, remaining.
Manchester United striker Lukaku took his goals tally to the tournament to four as the Red Devils carved open Tunisia’s defense with an impressive attacking display.
Dylan Bronn and captain Wahbi Khazri grabbed consolation goals for Tunisia, who now face almost certain elimination.
Belgium and England will qualify for the last 16 on Sunday if England defeat Panama in Nizhny Novgorod.
As the fallout from Friday’s politically charged clash between Switzerland and Serbia rumbled, FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Swiss players Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri over their pro-Kosovo goal celebrations.
FIFA is also probing Serbian national team Mladen Krstajic for alleged statements made after the game.
Both Xhaka and Shaqiri, who have roots in Kosovo, a former province of Serbia that has declared independence in a move not recognized by Belgrade, celebrated their goals in the 2-1 win by making a gesture representing the Albanian flag.
Disciplinary proceedings have also been opened against the Serbian FA for crowd disturbances and the display of political and offensive messages by Serbian fans, world football’s governing body said in a statement.
Krstajic demanded German match referee Felix Brych be tried as a war criminal in The Hague after failing to award his team a penalty.

Ray Parks makes everybody look good in Mandaluyong El Tigre first MPBL victory

IMUS — Challenged by his coach to let his game do the talking, Ray Parks put on a solid performance, one that would speak volumes of how a great player he is.
Late Saturday night at Imus City Sports Complex here, the son of the late seven-time PBA Best Import made everybody on the Mandaluyong El Tigre’s lair look good and powered his team to a 71-61 win over the Zamboanga Valientes-Family’s Brand Sardines in the MPBL Datu Cup.
Earlier, Gen San invaded Imus and the visiting Warriors pulled off a hard-earned 79-73 triumph over the GLC Truck and Equipment-backed Bandera.
Parks dished out a league high 15 assists, eclipsing the previous record set by Paolo Hubalde of the Valenzuela Classic-CDO Idol Cheesedog. The back-to-back UAAP and ABL MVP also added 13 markers on top of six rebounds.
“I challenged him not to ruin his name by saying things like that. It won’t help him anyway,” Mac Cuan, head coach of the Mandaluyong El Tigre, told BusinessWorld. “The only way he could shut up the critics is by playing his game.”
Against the Valientes, Parks showed a glimpse of his greatness.
His court vision was phenomenal as he was setting up his teammates good looks top the basket. When his offense is needed, he would step up and knock down big baskets. Most of all, he was playing with a lot more energy, which was crucial in the win, according to Cuan.
“We lost our first game because we simply came out flat. During our past few practices, we tried to identify players who play with more energy and this will be essential in our win,” added Cuan.
One among the players who stepped up was Prince Rivero the undersized forward, who led his team’s production with 18 points. Gian Abrigo, a hardworking forward who was rarely utilized in the last outing, grabbed 13 rebounds for the El Tigre.
The El Tigre posted a 15-point lead, 46-30, early in the third period, but Von Lanete, brother of Chico and Garvo, who are now both playing in the PBA, rallied the Valientes. His back-to-back triples along with one hit by Noy Javier shoved Zamboanga within striking distance, 46-45.
Mandaluyong, however, responded with nine unanswered points to pull away anew. — Rey Joble

Kaya FC gets better of Davao in high-scoring, emotional game

KAYA FC-ILOILO bounced back from a previous loss in the Philippines Football League (PFL), defeating Davao Aguilas FC, 4-3, on Saturday in a high-scoring and emotionally charged match at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Fell to Davao, 3-1, in their earlier match on June 20, Kaya made sure not to bow down for a second straight time by playing with a sense of urgency and took the fight to the Aguilas at the onset.
Robert Lopez Mendy scored first for Kaya four minutes into the match, lifting Janrick Soriano’s long ball over the onrushing Davao goalkeeper.
The Aguilas though would equalize in the 25th minute thanks to Sung Min Kim.
But Kaya would seize control anew as the opening half drew to a close with Ghanaian midfielder Alfred Osei converting a free kick from Ronilo Bayan to a goal and giving his team a 2-1 advantage by halftime.
Mr. Lopez Mendy struck again for Kaya in the 62nd minute to make it a 3-1 lead but Davao would show resilience after, led by James Younghusband.
The long-time national team member racked two straight goals in the 77th and 90th minute to level the count at 3-3.
With a draw looming in stoppage time, Kaya made one last-ditch effort to haul a win, and was rewarded accordingly as Mr. Osei found an opening to unleash a shot that got past the Davao defense in the 92nd minute, which proved to be the marginal goal that handed Kaya the win.
“The result shows how much we wanted that game. When they equalized, we were hungrier to get that goal again. The players really worked hard. They had that big heart in finishing the game and got the three points. I’m really proud of my boys,” said victorious Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida after their win.
The victory was the third for Kaya over Davao in five league matches in the PFL this season, with the two other games ending in a defeat and a draw.
Kaya now has 26 points from 14 games, good for second place to date, while Davao remains at 23 points after 16 outings for third.

Real Madrid, YKK pay it forward through football

ONE of the most popular football clubs in the world, Real Madrid, and YKK Holding Asia PTE. Ltd. (YHA) and YKK Philippines recently joined forces to be of service to others by way of “The Beautiful Game.”
The groups staged at the weekend the YKK Asia Group Kids Football Clinic at the McKinley Hill Stadium in Taguig where 300 underprivileged children learned football over two days of fun and interactive training sessions from Real Madrid Foundation-trained coaches who shared football tips, techniques and basic fundamentals with the young athletes.
The two-day clinic from June 23-24 was participated in by kids eight years old to 15 from three nongovernment organizations — Child Hope Asia, Gawad Kalinga and a community in Batangas — in sessions held in the morning and afternoon.
First held in the country in 2012, the second staging of the YKK football clinic, company officials said, remained in line with their corporate philosophy of the “Cycle of Goodness,” which states that “No one prospers without rendering benefit to others.”
“Our objective is to give the underprivileged the chance to be part of this football clinic. YKK’s presence in the Philippines dates back since 1978, and our growth and success during these 40 years owes a great deal to the local society which our customers and employees also form part of. It is a great opportunity and pleasure for us to give back and help create the initial spark of encouragement for children who do not normally experience big-name events due to its exclusivity. This time, it’s their turn to experience greatness,” said Tadashi Koshio, president of YKK Philippines, Inc., of the rationale behind the whole event.
For the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), the federation overseeing the sport in the country, the staging of the clinics was a good complement to what it is trying to achieve as far as the promotion and development of football here.
“We hope this clinic will develop more players and inspire others,” said PFF General Secretary Ed Gastanes, adding, “We are always pleased that the Real Madrid Foundation is bringing their style of play and style of coaching here. We are happy that YKK Asia Group and YKK Philippines have partnered with Real Madrid Foundation for another meaningful and significant clinic.”
During the two-day clinic, each participant received a full set of YKK/Real Madrid Foundation football jersey kit which includes football boots, a cap, socks, and a certificate of participation.
Other sporting equipment such as footballs, sports bibs and training cones were also provided by YKK. Furthermore, YKK will donate all footballs and training equipment after the event to the invited NGO. — Michael Angelo S. Murillo

FIFA probes Swiss players’ pro-Kosovo celebrations

MOSCOW — FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Swiss players Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri on Saturday over their pro-Kosovo goal celebrations during the 2-1 win against Serbia.
Switzerland’s scorers on Friday, Xhaka and Shaqiri, celebrated their goals by making a “double eagle” gesture with their hands to represent the Albanian flag.
Many people in Kosovo, which has an ethnic Albanian majority, identify with the flag.
Both players trace their roots to Kosovo, a former province of Serbia that declared independence in 2008 in a move that Belgrade still refuses to recognize.
FIFA bans all political messages or symbols in stadiums. Xhaka and Shaqiri could be banned for up to two games if they are found to have breached FIFA regulations.
World football’s governing body said it was also probing Serbia coach Mladen Krstajic for alleged statements made after the game.
Krstajic reacted to the defeat by calling for the match referee, Felix Brych of Germany, to be put on trial in a war crimes tribunal in the Hague for failing to award Serbia a penalty.
Serbia were furious when Brych failed to award a spot-kick in the 66th minute after Aleksandar Mitrovic was wrestled to the ground in the penalty area by Swiss defenders Stephan Lichtsteiner and Fabian Schaer.
“We were robbed,” Mladen Krstajic told Serbian reports Saturday, when asked about Brych’s decision.
“I wouldn’t give him either a yellow or red card, I would send him to the Hague. Then they could put him on trial, like they did to us.”
Disciplinary proceedings have also been opened against the Serbian football association for crowd disturbances and the display of political and offensive messages by Serbian fans.
The Serbian press meanwhile called Shaqiri’s goal celebration “shameful provocation.”
The player said in a post-match interview his celebration was “just emotion” but added he was not allowed to talk about politics.
Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic indicated after the win that he was unimpressed by Shaqiri and Xhaka’s celebrations.
“You should never mix politics and football,” he said.
The Serbian football association had also reportedly complained to FIFA before the game about the Kosovo flag that adorned one of Shaqiri’s boots.
“We sought that he change the boots. It was a provocation, we were playing against Switzerland, not Kosovo,” team official Jovan Surbatovic told Serbian state-run broadcaster RTS.
Kosovo declared independence in 2008, less then a decade after the 1998-1999 war between ethnic Albanian guerillas and Serb forces, but Belgrade — backed by its traditional ally Russia — still refuses to recognize the move. — AFP

Eustaquio sees championship vision through in Macau

VENI, vidi, vici. Now Filipino mixed martial arts fighter Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio is the undisputed ONE Championship World Flyweight champion.
In a riveting performance on Saturday night at “ONE: Pinnacle of Power” in Macau, China, Baguio native Eustaquio added his name to the list of world MMA champions from the Philippines after defeating erstwhile champ Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes in their unification bout by split decision.
The interim world champion entering the contest, Mr. Eustaquio saw his vision through of becoming the undisputed flyweight champ by standing toe to toe with Brazilian Moraes for the full five rounds en route to the big win, which incidentally was a payback as well to the defeat the Filipino suffered to Mr. Moraes four years ago.
“The feeling is awesome. I want to thank all my countrymen here who came out to support me. I came to Macau with one vision, and that is to [unify the flyweight titles], and I know I am not capable of doing this alone. I want to thank God, Team Lakay, and of course, my family,” a jubilant Eustaquio said following his championship victory.
“And to all the fans, thank you so much for the undying support. Ladies and gentlemen, when I started 14 years ago, this was impossible. But now, after 14 years, impossible is not a word, it’s just a reason. Anybody can be a world champion, as long as you have the drive and the attitude. I am proud to be the undisputed ONE Flyweight World Champion this time,” added the 29-year-old Eustaquio, who improved his record to 11-6.
Messrs. Eustaquio and Moraes went back-and-forth in their unification joust, swapping solid blows and momentum-shifting takedowns from bell to bell. Neither of the two would give each other any quarter for five rounds as both men traded their best offense all throughout the highly anticipated title unification contest.
In the end though, Mr. Eustaquio proved he did more, sending the crowd into a rapturous chorus of cheers by clinching a split decision win over Mr. Moraes.
Meanwhile, in the co-main event, “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan of China successfully defended the ONE Women’s Strawweight World Championship, defeating elite South American contender Laura Balin.
Also victorious was Filipino flyweight standout Danny “The King” Kingad of Team Lakay, who beat Ma Hao Bin of China by unanimous decision in the preliminary fights in Macau.
Unfortunately for Team Lakay, it did not go 3-of-3 as the third member of its team that saw action, Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly, succumbed to a second-round technical knockout loss (strikes) to former ONE featherweight champion Narantungalag Jadambaa of Cambodia.
Next for ONE Championship is “Spirit of a Warrior” on June 29 in Yangon where concurrent middleweight and light-heavyweight world champion Aung la “The Burmese Python” N Sang will stake his middleweight belt against Japan’s Ken Hasegawa. — Michael Angelo S. Murillo

Pricey for trade

Dennis Schroder was, if nothing else, candid during a news conference he held in Germany last month. Asked about his views heading into the 2018-19 season, he made no secret of his desire to change addresses. The Hawks, he noted, were rebuilding, not exactly the situation he envisioned himself to be in through his best years. “I will be 25 in September, and, of course, you want to win a title sometime. In my prime — 23, 36, 27, 28, 29 — I want to compete,” he contended.
In this regard, Schroder bared plans to sit down with Hawks management and discuss his options. And while he did note that staying put would be ideal, he went on to break ties with the franchise on social media, as clear a message that he could send regarding his preference. Never mind the seeming disconnect between his gaze at the Larry O’Brien Trophy and his mention of the Pacers and the Bucks as ideal destinations. With due credit to, and for all, the latter’s advances, better alternatives abound were he really intent on wrapping his arms around hardware.
Needless to say, the Hawks got the message. In last week’s rookie draft, they traded their third pick to the Mavericks and used their downgraded position to take guard Trae Young, whom advanced analytics pegged to reach All-Star status with the same probability as Number One pick Deandre Ayton. General manager Travis Schlenk was, no doubt, swayed by his experience with the Warriors and what he saw of Steph Curry’s development to project the rookie’s career track. At the same time, he got insurance for Schroder’s possible departure.
At this point, the Hawks will most certainly be dangling their leading scorer and playmaker to interested parties. While Schroder will be a willing participant in the process, however, his relatively expensive contract is a problem. He’s due $46.5 million over the next three years, numbers that don’t quite match his skill set in today’s cap-tight environment. In other words, long faces may be in the offing, and not just because yet another losing season awaits.

Bello wants wage adjustments by July

LABOR SECRETARY Silvestre H. Bello III has urged regions deliberating on wage adjustments to fast-track this process by the “end of June” until July 15.
In an interview last Friday, Executive Director Ms. Ma. Criselda R. Sy of the National Wages and Productivity Commission said regions who’ll be issuing wage orders soon are “CAR (Cordillera Administrative Region), Region III (Central Luzon), Region VI (Western Visayas), Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula), and Region XI (Davao region).”
She added that these regions “are in different stages of consultations and public hearings.”
All the mentioned regions have already reached their wage order anniversaries.
The national inflation rate as of May is at 4.6%. According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), inflation in the Davao Region, Western Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula is at 5.0%, 5.5%, and 6.1%, respectively. Inflation in CAR and Central Luzon is at 3.8% and 2.6%, respectively.
Inflation is deemed a supervening condition for adjusting wages ahead of the year-long period for wages in effect. When asked if other regions will base their adjustments on said supervening conditions, Ms. Sy said, “They are closely monitoring.”
“Some regions are still consulting,” she added. — Gillian M. Cortez

Cayetano slams ‘misinformation’ to UN body

By Camille A. Aguinaldo
THE PHILIPPINES’ top diplomat on Sunday responded to the joint statement of 38 countries led by Iceland during a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) meeting which urged the Philippines to cooperate with the UN in assessing the human rights situation in the country.
“We regret that Iceland and several other countries maintained their position despite our offer for them to visit the Philippines and objectively assess the human rights situation, especially at the community level,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano, who is currently in New York, said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, it seems our friends are really not interested in arriving at the truth and would rather rely on the misinformation being fed to them by parties that have politicized and weaponized human rights,” Mr. Cayetano also said.
He added: “Politics is politics but politicizing human rights endangers lives.”
Mr. Cayetano also said he has personally extended an invitation to Iceland’s Foreign Minister Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson to visit Manila to see for himself the human rights situation in the country.
At the general debate of the UNHRC’s 38th session last June 19, Iceland said the international body may pursue initiatives to ensure member states such as the Philippines comply with its human rights obligations.
It also urged the Philippines to put an end to killings associated with the government’s campaign against illegal drugs. The European country also expressed concerns over the reported harassment of human rights defenders, journalists, and members of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).
“We are encouraged by reports that the Government of the Philippines has indicated a willingness to cooperate with the UN to allow an objective assessment of the human rights situation in the country. We urge the Government of the Philippines to cooperate with the United Nations system —including the Human Rights Council and its special procedure mandate holders — without preconditions or limitations,” Iceland stated.
Iceland delivered the statement on behalf of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and the United States.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN Evan P. Garcia has responded to the joint statement during the general debate, saying the Philippines remained a responsible member state of the UNHRC.
“We are respectful of our international human rights obligations. We remain a free, dynamic, and democratic society. There is no basis, therefore, for the Council to be concerned with the situation in the Philippines,” Mr. Garcia was quoted as saying.
He also pointed to the anti-migrant sentiments of some European countries, including the nations that spoke against the Philippines.
“We remind countries that have such severe shortcomings, including the United Kingdom and Australia, that the Philippines has preferred to engage with them in a positive manner, whether bilaterally or multilaterally. This is in stark contrast with the needlessly confrontational attitude they have taken in (the Human Rights) Council,” Mr. Garcia said.
Mr. Thordarson previously raised the human rights situation in the Philippines last February during the 37th session of the UNHRC. Some 39 countries, including Iceland, also urged the Philippines in Sept. last year to end the killings related to the government’s war on drugs after the Philippine government rejected some of the recommendations of UN member states to address human rights issues in the country.

Palace: Chinese plane’s stop for ‘refueling’

By Arjay L. Balinbin, Reporter
MALACAÑANG on Sunday defended the second landing this month of a Chinese aircraft in President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s hometown of Davao City, saying the stop was only for “refueling.”
“Same as first. Refueling stop. All licenses, permits and protocols (were) issued and observed,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry L. Roque, Jr. said in a text message to Palace reporters on Sunday morning, June 24.
The Chinese aircraft landed at Francisco Bangoy International Airport last Saturday, June 23, at 12:18 p.m. and left at 12:59 p.m., ABS-CBN News reported.
But it remains unclear if last Saturday’s landing was by the same military transport plane IL-76, which landed in Davao City on June 8.
For his part, opposition Magdalo Party-list Rep. Gary C. Alejano said in a social media post, “We have no formal military agreements with China which makes landings like that.”
He added, “[It is] unusual especially if high defense officials were not aware. On one hand, we have an existing visiting forces agreement with Australia & the US.”
Ano kaya ang binabalik-balik nito sa Davao? (Why does the aircraft keep coming back to Davao City?),” the lawmaker also said.
In a media interview on Saturday evening, Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher Lawrence “Bong” T. Go said, “Itong Chinese aircraft, I think pangalawa na ito na nag-refuel po sa Davao (I think this is the second aircraft to stop for refueling in Davao City). Pero itong (But this) request na ‘to was received, processed, cleared by relevant Philippine agencies.”
“The landing was requested for a specific refueling, and it was granted and given with specific conditions, with compliance of the requested party,” he said.
Mr. Go also said “foreign government and commercial planes” that land in the Philippines “for refueling purposes” have to follow “domestic procedures and in consideration of existing agreements.”
“The same courtesy is tended to Philippine aircrafts when technical stuff need to be undertaken,” he added.
As for Mr. Alejano’s statement, Mr. Go said: “Congressman Alejano, Navy ka naman, e di tanungin mo rin ang mga kaibigan mo sa Navy at sa Armed Forces. Hindi naman magsisinungaling yung mga Armed Forces sa iyo kasi dati mo rin silang kasamahan, so better ask them.” (Congressman Alejano, you [used to be part of the] Navy. Ask your friends in the Navy and the Armed Forces. They will not lie to you because you were part of them, so better ask them.)

Roman says civil partnership a more realistic option for LGBT couples

CIVIL PARTNERSHIP, rather than marriage, is the “best and most feasible option for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in the Philippines, Bataan Rep. Geraldine B. Roman said on Sunday. “Same-Sex Marriage and Civil Partnership have different names but they give us practically the same rights and obligations as any legally-recognized relationship,” Ms. Roman, the first transgender woman elected in Congress, said in a statement. Ms. Roman, vice-chair of the House committee on women and gender equality, cited the reality that majority of Filipinos remain unaccepting of same-sex marriage. “To say that the Philippines and Congress are already ready for Same-Sex Marriage would simply be dishonest,” the solon said. “For us to actually effect changes in our country, we have to keep our two feet on the ground and face the reality that Civil Partnership has greater chances of being approved in Congress,” she added. The Supreme Court on June 19 held the first oral arguments on the petition filed by lawyer Jesus M. Falcis III to legalize same-sex marriage in the country. Mr. Falcis and Solicitor-General Jose C. Calida have been directed to return to the high court on Tuesday for the continuation of the hearing. — Charmaine A. Tadalan
