SOUTH Korean students are expected to try their hand at landing jobs in the Philippines, starting with visits to improve their command of the English language, the Korean business chamber said.
The Korean Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Inc. (KCCI) President Lee Hok-in said 10,000 South Korean university students are currently enrolled in Philippine institutions, a number he expects to grow in the next few years.
“Because the Philippines is good in English, many Koreans go here. Maybe they are not advantaged enough to go to the US or maybe the Philippines is very near,” Mr. Lee said in an interview.
He added that the time spent in the Philippines may translate to seeking other opportunities.
“Not many students find good jobs in Korea. So the people who are not qualified or do not get good jobs might stay here to find better opportunities,” Mr. Lee added.
He said many South Koreans are unable to cope with the evolving nature of work in the country.
“We’re starting to jump off to another stage because our economy is quite mature,” Mr. Lee added.
The chamber will host a job fair for South Koreans on May 26, featuring on-the-spot interviews as well as candidate evaluations via Skype. — Janina C. Lim
