Ma’ Rosa

Ma’ Rosa

A POOR FAMILY scrambles to find the money to pay off the corrupt policemen that have arrested the parents for dealing drugs. Directed by Brillante Mendoza, it stars Jaclyn Jose (who won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her work in this film) and Julio Diaz. “There’s nothing profoundly original here, but there’s no denying the atmosphere of squalid authenticity,” writes Time Out’s Geoff Andrew. “Boasting a simple, coherent plot shot with real-time, handheld verismo, it’s a work of understated confidence,” writes Variety ’s Maggie Lee.

The Purge: Election Year

The Purge: Election Year

IN THE latest installment of the film series, a presidential candidate with intentions of ending the Purge is betrayed and must fight to survive on the deadliest night of the year. Written and directed by James DeMonaco, it stars Betty Gabriel, Edwin Hodge, and Frank Grillo. “It isn’t particularly subtle, but The Purge: Election Year’s blend of potent jolts and timely themes still add up to a nastily effective diversion,” is the critical consensus on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, which gave the film at 53% rating.
