THE Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) central office reported 21% reduction in fuel consumption after implementing compressed workweek and austerity measures in February and March.

In a news release on Thursday, DoLE said that based on its internal assessment covering the office of the secretary, undersecretaries, assistant secretaries, bureaus, and services, total fuel consumption declined by 970.22 liters to 3,752.63 liters in March.

It followed a directive requiring Philippine government agencies to enforce strict energy conservation protocols amid the Iran war.

The agency said several units recorded notable reductions, including the administrative service, which posted an 80% drop equivalent to 92.89 liters.

DoLE attributed the overall decline to fewer onsite reporting days under the compressed workweek arrangement, which allowed for optimized use of government vehicles and reduced transport-related activities.

The central office also reported gains in energy efficiency, with electricity consumption falling by 14.93% from 113,560 kilowatt-hours in February to 100,720 kilowatt-hours in March. — Erika Mae P. Sinaking
