GINEBRA San Miguel, Inc. (GSMI) said on Thursday that it had strengthened its lead in the hard liquor category with a 10-percentage-point lead in market share ahead of its nearest competitor.
In its press release, the San Miguel Corp. subsidiary attributed its market standing to research firm Nielsen. It did not disclose its exact market share.
As of the first quarter, GSMI said gross revenues reached P12.62 billion, 11.3% higher than the level a year ago, citing sustained growth momentum from last year.
It said that with better margins, net income during the three-month period hit P1.4 billion, up 34% year on year. It reported an attributable income to owners of P1.33 billion, or higher by 27.9% than the previous year.
GSMI said strong marketing campaigns “along with on-ground activities and aggressive selling” added to boost its quarterly performance.
It said its latest campaigns include “Hanggang Huling Patak ng Bagong Tapang,” which showed “the real-life struggles, sacrifices, and never-say-die spirit” of Filipinos during the pandemic, “Choose What’s True” for GSM Blue and “Salamats, Pri” for Primera Light Brandy.
GSMI is the maker Ginebra San Miguel, which it claims to be the world’s largest-selling gin, citing global drinks journal Drinks International.
Its other distilled spirits include GSM Blue Light Gin, GSM Blue Mojito, GSM Blue Margarita, GSM Blue Gin Pomelo, Ginebra San Miguel Premium Gin, 1834 Premium Distilled Gin, Antonov Vodka, Añejo Gold Rum, Primera Light Brandy, and the Philippines’ no. 1 Chinese wine Vino Kulafu.
In 2021, GSMI generated revenues of P42.5 billion, up 17% from the previous year, while operating income grew by 39% to P5.3 billion.
“Despite the pandemic persisting in 2021, GSMI delivered strong sales to close at nearly 42 million cases — the highest sales ever in a single year, and posted a full-year net income of P4.2 billion, 52% higher than prior year — setting a new record for the company,” it said.
On Thursday, shares in the company rose 0.09% or 10 centavos to close at P108.10 apiece.
