BCDA awards Clark airport’s second runway design contract
THE JOINT venture between engineering company Schema Konsult, Inc. and South Korea-based Yooshin Engineering Corp. has secured the P206.9-million contract for the design of Clark International Airport’s (CRK) second runway, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said.
In a media release on Monday, BCDA said it is advancing the development of the Clark airport’s second runway after awarding the contract for the project’s design.
“By building a second runway, we are taking a significant step toward strengthening CRK’s operational resilience and long-term capacity. This development will build in redundancy to ensure uninterrupted operations, minimize the risk of disruption, and enhance Clark’s competitiveness as a premier logistics and aviation hub,” BCDA President and Chief Executive Officer Joshua M. Bingcang said.
The second runway will serve as the airport’s backup to the main runway in case of unavailability or disruptions, BCDA said, noting that this also ensures safe operations and would allow non-stop airport movement.
The project’s detailed engineering design is anticipated to be completed in the second quarter of next year, it said. Once completed, a separate bidding will be conducted for the project’s construction phase with the new runway projected to be operational by the last quarter of 2029.
The additional runway would also support the growing demand from logistics carriers, BCDA said.
“More importantly, this development will benefit Clark and the wider Central Luzon Region by enhancing connectivity for locators and businesses, while also generating more employment opportunities for the local communities as airports and related support services expand,” Mr. Bingcang said.
In 2025, Luzon International Premiere Airport Development (LIPAD) Corp., the operator of Clark International Airport, said it needs a second, or alternate, runway to support operations, as it would provide redundancy for cargo and passenger flights.
At present, Clark International Airport has a single runway, which can handle up to 40 aircraft movements per hour.
For this year, LIPAD is expecting a 15% increase in its total passenger volume to 3.1 million mainly driven by the transfer of turboprops outside Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
LIPAD logged a total of 2.75 million passengers in 2025, 15% higher than the 2.40 million in 2024, mainly driven by growth in domestic passenger volume and surge in seat capacities. — Ashley Erika O. Jose
