THE NATIONAL Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) said on Tuesday that it has received reports that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is engaged in a two-stage plan: to assassinate Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison and then overthrow President Rodrigo R. Duterte through a coup ‘d état. In a press statement released yesterday, the NDFP said: “[E]ven while the two-stage military plot, especially the first stage, needs further verification, the plot must be immediately exposed in order to discourage its implementation.” Mr. Sison has been living in exile in The Netherlands since 1987. For his part, Brig. Gen. Restituto F. Padilla, Jr., AFP spokesperson, said in a text message to reporters yesterday that the NDFP’s claim is “not true at all.” “This is once again a propaganda line of the left to gain sympathy and toe the anti-US line that they usually take. Again this is such a preposterous statement!,” he added. — Jil Danielle M. Caro
