THE Philippine Blu Girls has scored another upset against world no. 3 Canada, 6-3, ending the campaign of the host country in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.
The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Filipinas outclassed the hosts by quickly establishing a 5-0 lead, courtesy of Kailee Cuico’s three-run homer at the top of the 1st and Hailey Decker’s 2 RBIs at the top of the 2nd. The Philippines took a commanding 6-0 lead in the 5th with Cuico’s single that sent Chelsea Kaithlyn Suitos home, before giving Canada a break in the last 2 innings.
“This is the second time that the Blu Girls has beaten powerhouse Canada in this tournament, which proves that our country is getting stronger in the sport. The team has been taking each game to heart. If they keep up this pace, there is no doubt that the Philippines could contend for a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines President Jean Henri Lhuillier.
The 17th-ranked Pinay softbelles will face Puerto Rico on Sunday (Monday in Manila) in a bid to extend its campaign in the tournament.
