SOLO PARENTS residing in San Juan City can now avail of discounts in basic goods, hospitalization, and tuition fees, among others with the issuance of an ordinance requiring establishments to provide such benefits. City Ordinance No. 8, approved by the council last Feb 18, states that qualified residents should apply for a Solo Parent ID to avail all benefits such as 5% discount in basic necessities in grocery stores and supermarkets; 20% off for medicines, 30% on hospital bills for the solo parent or his/her minor child at the San Juan Medical Center, and 20% in all other public and private hospitals and health facilities; 10% on tuition fees or the issuance of tuition vouchers for minor children; and 20% discount for the solo parent and his/her minor children on movie tickets and other leisure events. Establishments that will not grant the privileges without justifiable cause must pay a fine of P5,000. Solo parents found using a fake ID or fail to report change in circumstances will also be penalized. — Vince Angelo C. Ferreras
