PRESIDENT RODRIGO R. Duterte has accepted the resignation letter of embattled Commission on Election Chairman Andres D. Bautista.

A letter dated Monday, Oct. 23, by Executive Secretary Salvador C. Medialdea read in part: “We refer to your letter tendering your resignation as Chairman of the Commission on Elections.”

“Upon the instruction of Rodrigo Roa Duterte, I wish to inform you that your resignation is hereby accepted, effective immediately.”

This means that as of today, Mr. Bautista is no longer Comelec chairman.

On Oct. 11, Mr. Bautista sent his resignation letter to the Office of the President, citing “personal reasons” for leaving.

Before filing his resignation, Mr. Bautista was facing an impeachment complaint for culpable violation of the Constitution and graft and corruption. The House of Representatives voted to impeach Mr. Bautista that day.

However, Malacañang’s accepting Mr. Bautista’s resignation renders moot his impeachment trial, under which the penalty for conviction is removal from office. — Rosemarie A. Zamora
