THE second round of the ongoing National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 94 begins today with league-leaders Lyceum Pirates and San Beda Red Lions kicking off the proceedings.
Undefeated Lyceum (9-0) takes on bottom-scraping San Sebastian Stags (1-8) in the 2 p.m. seniors’ play curtain-raiser at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City while San Beda (8-1) battles the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers (2-7) at 4 p.m.
The Pirates are once again on track of finishing the elimination spotless like what they did last season.
Reigning league most valuable player CJ Perez has been leading the charge with solid all-around numbers of 20.3 points, eight rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.6 steals to date to help his team to another good run.
Mike Nzeusseu has been steady for 13.6 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks while Jaycee Marcelino is the other player in double-digits in scoring for Lyceum with 13.1 points.
The Pirates defeated San Beda, 73-66 in their last game in the elimination round on Aug. 21 where Perez once again led his team with 22 points.
“We are playing for ourselves and nobody else. It’s a continuous development for us even with all these wins,” said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson after their win over San Beda.
LIONS
The Lions, meanwhile, bounced back well since losing to the Pirates, sweeping their remaining first-round assignments, the last one against the Bombers, 77-40, on Aug. 28.
It was a total team effort for San Beda, which dominated right from the start and never allowed the Bombers to get their game going.
Calvin Oftana had a career-high 16 points for the Lions in the win with AC Soberano adding 11 points.
Robert Bolick continues to lead the Lions with averages of 18.2 points and 5.1 assists while Javee Mocon has been good for 12.4 points and 9.4 rebounds.
Big man Donald Tankoua is averaging 11.6 points and 9.3 rebounds for San Beda.
Meanwhile, Arellano Chiefs Maui Sera Josef was adjudged NCAA player of the week helping his team to a come-from-behind 76-72 victory over the Perpetual Help Altas on Aug. 28.
