AN EVANGELICAL organization on Thursday backed the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill, saying there is nothing in the Bible that declares contraception as immoral.

"Nothing in the Bible says contraception is a prohibited act," Bishop Efraim M. Tendero, national director of PCEC, said in a press conference at the Sulo Hotel in Quezon City.

The RH bill, he added, promotes responsible parenthood in fulfillment of the biblical teaching to "subdue the earth."

Malacañang has cited responsible parenthood as the underlying concept behind its support for both artificial and natural methods of family planning.

Life begins after fertilization or when the egg cell meets the sperm cell, Mr. Tendero said, thus making condoms and pills an acceptable for of contraception.

PCEC groups 25,000 churches, 66 denominations, and 150 parachurch and mission organizations.

House Bill 4244, or the consolidated Responsible Parenthood, Reproductive Health and Population Development Act, mandates the government to allocate a certain amount in the national budget for the purchase of contraceptives so that even the poor families will have access to all types of family planning methods.

The bill, which has been rejected by the Catholic Church, is being discussed in plenary. Congress, which is on break since March 26, resumes session on May 9. -- Noemi M. Gonzales
