Set for 2 p.m., the Ateneo Blue Eagles (3-2) face off with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons (1-4). Following it is the match between league leaders De La Salle Green Archers (5-0) and University of the East Red Warriors (0-5) at 4 p.m.

The Eagles enter the game off a win over UE, 84-69, on Sept. 24, where they were boosted by the play of guard Anton Asistio to stave off the Warriors.

The veteran guard scored 21 points, going four-of-eight from beyond the arc. Sophomore Adrian Wong chipped in 17 and Mike Nieto and import Chibueze Ikeh each having 11 points and combining for 13 boards for the Tab Baldwin-coached Eagles, which bounced back from a previous loss.

“It was not an easy win for us [against UE]. But hopefully we get to learn from this and help us continue to improve,” said Ateneo coach Sandy Arespacochaga following their win.

Ateneo is angling for its first-ever back-to-back wins this season in today’s game while seizing solo second place.

While it lost in its last game, UP has been competing well of late and giving its opponents a run for their money.

Against the defending champions Far Eastern University Tamaraws last time around, the Fighting Maroons pushed FEU up to the end before bowing down by two points, 51-49.

Paul Desiderio led the way for UP with 15 points while Dave Moralde had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Despite the loss, UP coach Bo Perasol welcomes the way his wards are playing in their last two games where they hacked out a win over UE and competed against FEU.

He said that they have to learn how to finish things in the end so as to put them in a better position to win games.

Last year, Ateneo swept UP in the two games of their “Battle of Katipunan.”

Meanwhile, La Salle’s Kib Montalbo was named UAAP player of the week after shining in their 91-75 win over the Adamson Soaring Falcons last Saturday.

The comebacking Montalbo, who suffered an ACL injury last year, continued with his solid play in the season with 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals in the Adamson win that took their record to 5-0.

The award marked the third straight week that a La Salle player took the weekly honors, after Ben Mbala and Jeron Teng.
