Negros bets bare poll expenses

BACOLOD CITY -- Defeated gubernatorial candidate, Vice-Governor Genaro Alvarez, Jr. was the top spender in the last elections in Negros Occidental, according to the provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec) office.

The official, according to the Statement of Contributions and Expenditures, spent ₱1.853 million while his opponent, reelected Governor Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr. reported ₱1.776 million.

Rep. Alfredo "Albee" B. Benitez (3rd district), the fourth richest member of the House of Representatives with a net worth of ₱702 million in 2012, spent ₱811,196. He defeated former Rep. Jose Carlos V. Lacson who spent ₱284,991.

Board Member Melvin Ibañez, the province’s richest board member with a net worth of ₱46 million, and running mate of Mr. Marañon under the United Negros Alliance, shelled out ₱85,000. He lost to Vice Governor-elect Eugenio Jose Lacson, who spent ₱271,690.

The Alvarez-Lacson tandem ran under the Nationalist People’s Coalition.

Reelected Rep. Alejandro Y. Mirasol (5th district) spent ₱495,650 while his nephew and challenger, 5th District Board Member Emilio Yulo III, shelled out only ₱119,890.

Rep. Jeffrey P. Ferrer (4th district), who was reelected for a third and last term, forked out ₱479,994 while his rival Ike Barredo spent ₱209,773.

Rep. Julio A. Ledesma IV (1st district), the sixth richest member of the House with a net worth of ₱590.6 million, reported spending ₱247,500 for his campaign while his challenger, Board Member Nehemias de la Cruz, reported expenses of half-a-million pesos. Mr. Ledesma was reelected for a final term.

Rep. Mercedes K. Alvarez (6th district) shelled out ₱354,86 while her rival, Philip Arles, spent ₱140,000.

In Bacolod, the top spender was Mayor-elect Monico O. Puentevella, who spent ₱1.301 million for his campaign while his opponent, Vice-Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, spent ₱647,673.

Outgoing Bacolod Rep. Anthony Rolando T. Golez, Jr. reported expenses of ₱1.25 million. He was defeated by outgoing Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia who forked out ₱690,270.

Former Bacolod vice-mayor Renecito Novero spent ₱946,227. He lost in the vice-mayoral race to Greg Gasataya, who shelled out ₱167,092. -- Nanette L. Guadalquiver
