Sunrise Events leads PHL finalists at sports awards

MULTISPORT event organizer Sunrise Events, Inc. leads Philippine finalists at the second Asia Sports Industry Awards (SPIA Asia) happening in Bangkok, Thailand, next month.

Spearheaded by MMC Sportz, a Dubai and Manila-based sports advertising and communication agency, and Sport360, the leading daily sports content provider in the Middle East and North Africa, SPIA Asia 2016 is to recognize anew other proponents and facets of sports in the region, apart from the athletes.

This year 12 Asian Award Categories have been put out by organizers where submissions were received from different Asian countries. The entries for every category were evaluated by a panel of the region’s leading industry experts and overseen by auditors in strict accordance with the international sport industry award rules.

The categories are: Best Use of Social Media in Sport; Best Sports Marketing Campaign of the Year; Sports Media/ PR Agency of the Year; Best Sports Youth Program; Best Sports Organization or Sports Marketing Agency; Best Mass Participation Event of the Year; Best Sponsorship of a Sport, Team or Event; Sports Brand, Retail, Activation or Product Launch of the Year; Best Live Experience at a Professional Sporting Event; Best Sports CSR Initiative of the Year; Best Hospitality, Leisure and Recreation Offering in Sports; and Best Sports Digital Platform of the Year.

Sunrise Events, which organizes different multisport events in different parts of the country, has been shortlisted in two categories, namely Best Sports Organization of the Year and Best Mass Participation Event of the Year for its Cobra Ironman 70.3 Cebu event.

For Best Sports Organization of the Year, Sunrise Events is up against Hong Kong Ultra Marathon Association (Hong Kong), Global Professional Tennis Coach Association (Asia), IMG (Hong Kong), Mediapro Asia (Singapore), Peter Burwash International (Asia), Siam Inter Multimedia PCL (Thailand), Sporting Republic (Hong Kong), SportQuake (China), and XLE Group (Vietnam).

Joining it, meanwhile, as a finalist from the Philippines for Best Mass Participation Event of the Year are Color Manila Run by Color Manila Events, Inc. and Sunpiology Run by Sun Life Philippines.

Also short-listed is ABS-CBN Corp. for Best Sports Marketing Campaign of the Year for “UAAP Women’s Volleyball.” Joining it in the category is Great Campaigns Asia/Philippine Football for “Support the Philippine Azkals.”

For Best Use of Social Media in Sport, “#DameTimeManila-Never Doubt” by Adidas & Iprospect was short-listed. It is also a finalist for Sports Brand, Retail, Activation or Product Launch of the Year.

Rounding out the Philippine finalist is Cebuana Lhuillier Sports Advocacy for Philippine National Softball and Tennis for Best Sponsorship of a Sport, Team or Event of the Year.

In 2015, the first year of the SPIA Asia which was held in the country, Mall of Asia Arena of SM Prime Holding won the gold for Sport & Recreation Facility of the Year while winning silver was the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Also winning gold awards from the Philippines were ABS-CBN, Primer Group and Max Restaurants & Carat.

ABS-CBN was hailed for Best Sports Digital Platform for “Isang Bayan Para Kay Pacman,” a campaign it staged in support of Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as he took on American Floyd Mayweather, Jr., which called for Filipinos to rally behind Mr. Pacquiao through various methods via the different social media platforms.

Primer Group and Carat, meanwhile, won in the Best Sports CSR Campaign and Best Sports Marketing Campaign categories, respectively, with their “The Bike Doctors” and “Puso de Max” campaigns.

The 2016 SPIA Asia takes place on Oct. 3 & 4 at the Centara Grand Bangkok & Convention Center. Apart from the awards night, a conference under the headline “The Business of Sports -- Asia Sports Industry in the Fastlane II” is also scheduled. -- Michael Angelo S. Murillo
