Philippines to lead dialogue on disaster risk management

Posted on June 19, 2012

THE PHILIPPINES is set to sponsor a dialogue on disaster risk management as its special event at the Rio+20 summit on Tuesday in Brazil, the Climate Change Commission (CCC) said.

CCC Commissioner Heherson T. Alvarez said in a statement that the dialogue, entitled "Defying Disasters: A Tri-Continental South-South Dialogue," is an intercultural public-private partnership among the Philippines, Colombia and Kenya.

"This side event is a unique sharing of indigenous and global best practices in defying climate change disasters that threaten the tropical zone where the three cooperating countries are located," Mr. Alvarez noted.

He said climate change and global warming are now key concerns faced by countries around the world.

However, the effects of these phenomena are more pronounced for tropical nations whose climates make them more vulnerable to risks, such as the rise of sea levels, flash floods, storms and drought.

"The Philippines is the third most vulnerable country in the world," said Mr. Alvarez.

This dialogue, he noted, is one way by which the participating countries can share their experiences and their respective plans on disaster responsiveness, which could consequently serve as models for other developing nations to emulate.

Set to speak at the event are key officials from concerned United Nations (UN) organizations, such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and the UN’s International Panel on Climate Change, among others.

Officials from South America and Africa will also deliver remarks.

"UN (United Nations) and international officers have lauded the dialogue as a novel way of advancing technological and financial framework, cooperation to confront global disaster," said the commission. -- Bettina Faye V. Roc
