SEVEN AREAS in the country have tested positive for the red tide toxin, based on the latest laboratory results released by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Aug. 8. These are:

• Mandaon, Masbate

• Placer, Masbate

• Irong-Irong Bay, Catbalogan, Western Samar

• Inner Malampaya Sound, Taytay, Palawan

• Puerto Princesa Bay, Palawan

• Siit Bay, Siaton, Negros Oriental

• Balite Bay, Mati City, Davao Oriental

BFAR warned that all shellfish and alamang (Acetes sp.) from these areas are not safe for human consumption. On the other hand, fish, squids, shrimps and crabs remain safe to eat provided these are fresh and thoroughly cleaned. — Bloomberg
