LP to ‘confirm’ Roxas as standard-bearer

Posted on September 30, 2015

THERE WILL be no announcement yet on the Liberal Party’s (LP) vice-presidential candidate when party members meet at their Balay headquarters in Cubao, Quezon City, today. But a party official said they will proceed with “confirming” Manuel “Mar” A. Roxas II as their standard-bearer.

Newly appointed LP secretary-general and Occidental Mindoro Rep. Josephine R. Sato said the party has deferred naming its complete slate for the May 2016 polls. “The Liberal Party will be holding its joint National Directorate meeting on Sept. 30, 2015, in accordance with its constitution and bylaws and in compliance with the guidelines for holding political party conventions set by the Commission on Elections. The formal announcement of the LP presidential, vice-presidential candidates and Senate slate will be on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015,” Ms. Sato said in a statement.

Caloocan City Rep. Edgar R. Erice told reporters yesterday the LP will likely declare its full slate next week to heed the request of Camarines Sur Rep. Ma. Leonor “Leni” G. Robredo for more time to consider a vice-presidential candidacy.

“What will happen there is [we will] confirm the nomination of Secretary Mar Roxas as our presidential candidate,” Mr. Erice, the LP’s vice-president for political affairs, said.

Ms. Robredo, wife of the late interior secretary Jesse M. Robredo and the LP’s “sentimental favorite” for the post, said on Monday night that Wednesday would be “too short” a time to decide on Mr. Roxas’s offer to be his running mate. Ms. Robredo again cited the reluctance among her daughters over her pursuing a vice-presidential candidacy.
