DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has taken a 10-day leave of absence for reasons still unknown, on her supposedly first day of office, amid speculation that she would take on the role of First Lady for her father, President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Ms. Carpio, who has designated her brother, Vice-Mayor Paolo Z. Duterte, as acting mayor up to July 22, called for a press conference Thursday that was presided over instead by the Vice-Mayor.

“I was informed this morning that Mayor Sara Z. Duterte will go on leave until July 22,” Mr. Duterte said, adding that he was instructed by the Mayor to review all pending contracts of job-order employees and other related documents to ensure continued government service, as well as prepare the 2017 budget.

Lawyer Tristan Dwight P. Domingo, formerly assistant city administrator, also took over as acting city administrator after lawyer Melchor V. Quitain’s hasty exit from City Hall due to his new assignment at Malacañang.

But the mayor herself has disputed rumors about a role in the Palace. “There was no mention of anything about that,” she said in an interview following her recent oathtaking.

Meanwhile, photos of the Duterte siblings namely Sara, Paolo and Sebastian showing the president at the back while they made faces have gone viral.

“We just stayed at our hotel the whole time we were in Manila before the inauguration and we had nothing to do and my sister loves to take selfies,” The Vice-Mayor said. The siblings also prompted concern from the Presidential Security Group after they went out to the streets after the President’s inauguration to thank their father’s supporters.
